Platinum Jubilee

Tree Planting

Platinum Jubilee

Trees planted to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II

On Tuesday 23rd August, we gathered together to celebrate and commemorate the 70 years, Queen's Jubilee.

We commenced the event with a whole school outside assembly showcasing our Schools Student Leaders and our College Choir.

The project was to erect an environmental landscaped hedge across the front of the college to highlight the 70 years, the Queen’s Jubilee, and to recognise this significant event together with our college community. This project is jointly funded through Lalor North Secondary College and the Australian Government’s Planting Trees for Her Majesty, The Queen’s Jubilee Program. This project takes place on the Wurundjeri Country.

The plantings will create a stunning visual display of native flora and increase the community awareness and celebration of Her Majesty’s Jubilee.

We planted 220 Waterhousea Floribunda trees that will create an Australian Native windbreak, screening hedge along the wide frontage of the college grounds along Child’s Road.

This native tree is ideal for clipping as a tall hedge with lots of texture and colour. It grows well in excess of 2 metres. The biodiversity of our area includes the Darebin Creek with extensive birdlife and existing natural habitats. The planting of the trees will provide additional food sources and improve the extent and condition of existing natural habitats. The range of animals and plant life will be enhanced with the planting of additional flora in the eco system. It is this opportunity to connect and immerse the students in our local natural assets, and the indigenous culture of the area that presents for wonderful teaching and learning.

The students worked alongside our College gardeners, Favgro Group, who guided the students through the process of planting, staking, guarding and mulching each plant. Teachers, guests, School Council members and the wider community joined in the activities with much enthusiasm and the event proved to be a huge success with the hedge taking shape across the School frontage.

The College takes pride that we completed the planting to honour her Platinum Jubilee prior to her passing. As the years pass, and the trees grow, we will always look fondly remembering and acknowledging Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
