Real Industry Job Interviews – Year 10

Our Lalor North S.C Year 10 students are currently preparing to do a practice run of applying for a job, preparing a resume and cover letter, as well as attending a ‘mock’ interview on the 25th of October as part of the Real Industry Job Interviews.

This is such a great opportunity for our young students to participate in this very valuable Careers Program!

It aims to provide young people with the basic skills and confidence to apply for a position and attend an interview, which is all done in a student friendly, safe environment.

The Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI) are facilitated by the Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employment Network (HWLLEN) for all our local schools, and our students prepare for this activity during class time. Our school has been participating in the RIJI for many years (aside from the last two years) and have always returned with very positive feedback from the whole experience.

Selecting a ‘Mock’ job to apply for

Students have been given a choice of 16 fake job ads to choose from for this activity. They have been asked to pick out key words in the advertisement to help them create a resume relevant to the position.

Creating a Resume

Students use our Lalor North Careers Website which has an easy to use ‘Resume Builder’ which generates a professional looking resume once completed. Students have already drafted a ‘Personal Statement’ and thought about their own personal qualities.

We have discussed ‘Employability Skills’, which are transferrable skills a person has, which can be brought to any position they hold in the future.  Students who have not had a job before will still have transferrable employability skills to show on their resume, such as good communication skills, being punctual, being well organized… and many more.

Writing a Cover Letter

The next step will be to write a short ‘Cover Letter’ introducing themselves, to go with the resume and submit both to the Careers Team by the application due date of Thursday 15th September.

The ‘Mock’ Interview

The job applications will then be forwarded to the HWLLEN, so they can allocate students to a professional from the community who has volunteered their time from their busy jobs to give students a ‘mock interview’.  Students will be given simple interview questions during class time to practice answering before the interview.

Students will be encouraged to dress appropriately for an interview (i.e., clean, neat clothes and hair) and will be driven by bus as a group to the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre for the interview on Tuesday 25th October.

Feedback

Students will be provided with encouragement and constructive feedback from the person interviewing them.

A special thanks to the Year 10 Humanities Staff – Mr. Smardenkas and Mr. Stingas, for assisting with the students preparing their applications during the workshops.
