LIBRARY NEWS

Following the last few busy weeks with Book Week and the close of the Premier’s Reading Challenge, it’s been a relatively quiet week here in the library. We’re getting close to the end of term so classes are busy completing a variety of activities.
Fiction v Non-Fiction
Kindergarten has begun to learn that books can be about real (non-fiction) and not real (fictional) things and have quickly been able to identify whether a book is informative or written for entertainment. This week we’re reading two very different books about cats and learning to use the terms fiction and non-fiction. They've enjoyed reading ‘We Found a Cat’ by Heidi McKinnon and ‘Pet Cats Up Close’ by Gillia Olsen. Do you know what a cat’s tongue is made of?
KW were busy drawing their real and not real things.
Stage 1 are also reviewing the features of fiction and non-fiction and learning that non-fiction is arranged in subjects (not by alphabetical order by surname as fiction is). This week students will explore these subjects and select some of their favourites.
Stage 2 Green Screen Activity
I’m excited to begin a green screen project with Stage 2 that we’ve been talking about for a few weeks. Students will select a place or a thing that they would like to get ‘caught’ reading in or with. They’ve been busy this week selecting images that will work best and then next week begin taking photos in front of the green screen to place in their image. So far I’ve seen some very cool ideas with students going to be reading in a venus fly trap, on a whale, inside a dinosaur’s mouth, on the back of a ute, and even a plane. I can’t wait to show you these at the end of the term.
Stage 3 Google Website
Finally, stage 3 are continuing to build their Book Week website using Google Sites. So far they’ve completed their Home page and are busy working on showcasing the Picture Books of the Year. While learning more about these stories, they’re gaining valuable IT skills that they can use in Secondary.
HTS are Super Readers!
Have you ever wondered how many books classes borrow each month? In August, 2,219 books were borrowed by students from K to Year 10. Year 4 are the record readers with 396 books and Year 2 is closely behind on 316 with the most popular book ‘Sisters’ by Raina Telgemeier. Aaron Blabey continues to be the most popular author in the library, writing 4 of the top 10 books.
General Reminders
I have recently received from the Inverell Town Library some of our library books that were returned there instead of at school. Could I please ask that before you return anything to the town library, please check that they’re not the school’s books? Thanks for your help with this. Also, if anyone has any plastic bags we could use as spare library bags when children forget to bring one, it would be really appreciated.
Overdue Books
It's time to start having a good look at those overdue books, if you could please return them in the next couple of weeks, that would be appreciated.
Are you a Book Lover? We are.
Happy reading,
Mrs Toni Fraser
