Our Big Backyard Project (OBBY) in West Torrens

Our Big Backyard (OBBY) is a nature-based play program for children under 12, that encourages family connectedness through play and exploration.  This project has a community engagement focus where families and children are consulted and encouraged to explore where they live and who they share the community with. Our Big Backyard Project  was first developed and implemented in Southern Adelaide, incorporating Aldinga  and Christies Beach.

The resources developed through this project include:

- children’s play maps

- a list of things to do that are free and outdoors

- activity sheets that are both fun for children and informative for parents and carers.

Lockleys North Primary School along with Lockleys Children’s Centre are partners in this new project alongside the City of West Torrens, Cowandilla Children’s Centre and Natural Resources Management.  To begin this process, groups of students  from R-7 will be involved in a Climbing Tree incursion and consultation, to be held on Wednesday, 21st August. We are also seeking individual students in Year 4 or Year 5 who are interested in being a local champion and sharing their voice at the working group level. This will include attending consultation meetings with Mrs Saxon at the Hamra Centre Library, on Wednesday mornings once a term throughout the year.  Parents and carers who are also interested in being involved, along your child, are also welcome.  Please contact me at rosemary.mcleansaxon475@schools.sa.edu.au to indicate your child’s interest and whether you would also like to be involved.  Also, please email if you require further clarification.
