Curriculum In Focus

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) at Ocean Grove Primary School

Our inclusion philosophy at Ocean Grove Primary School is broad ranging and diverse, including those with different abilities, cultures, genders and relationships. We believe all students and members of our school community should be included, accepted and celebrated.

Currently at Ocean Grove we are implementing Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program across all year levels, which is mandated by the government. This includes 8 topics covering Emotional Literacy, Personal Strengths, Positive Coping, Problem Solving, Stress Management, Help Seeking, Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relations, which compliments our Social and Emotional program.

The Respectful Relationships whole-school approach recognises that schools are a workplace, a community hub and a place of learning. Everyone involved in our school community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally.

We know that changes can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are lived across the school community, and when classroom learning is reinforced by what is modelled in our school community.

A whole-school approach to Respectful Relationships recognises that schools are:

  • a workplace where all staff should feel equally respected, safe and valued and have equal opportunities
  • a safe space where young people can learn about gender equality and respectful relationships, in and out of the classroom
  • part of the wider community that can model gender equality and respectful relationships.

Keep an eye out for more information about RRRR in the future newsletters.

During week 7 we learn how to say our name and the colours that we like. The sentences in Indonesian are “Nama saya __________. Saya suka ___________ dan ___________. Eg: Nama saya Chelsea. Saya suka hitam dan biru. (My name is Chelsea. I like black and blue.

What colour do you like? Can you say your favourite colour(s) in Indonesian?

Kelas Satu dan Dua

During week 7 we are continuing our focus on the traditional Indonesian folk story, Kancil dan Harimau (Java Mouse-deer and Tiger). This week students will finish making their shadow puppets and will have the opportunity to recreate the story using the shadow puppet theatre.

You can watch a video of the story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uoaA5YYaiQ

Are there any other traditional Indonesian stories that you can find that feature the Kancil?

Kelas Tiga, Empat dan Lima

During week 7 we learn how to order a meal (including drink) in Indonesia. Students will become familiar with the question, “Silakan, saya mau makan ___________ and Silakan, saya mau minum ___________ which is one way to order a meal in Indonesia. They will use a menu from a restauran called “Warung Bagus.”

Another popular way to order is “Silakan, saya mau pesan __________ dan __________.”

If you are planning a trip to Indonesia soon, why not try to order a meal in Indonesian?
