COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
Last year the College was invited to participate in a very special program – Becoming Tech Savvy (see flyer attached). The program is designed to help senior citizens understand the basics of modern-day devices and bridge the intergenerational divide.
New Stanford research shows that aging adults play critical roles in the lives of young people, especially the most vulnerable in society. Volunteering is one way to bring older adults and young people together.
The key is to change social norms to encourage relationship building between generations.
Initially, you will be invited to a ‘meet and greet’ to get to know your program partner. This will be an ‘ice-breaker’ to introduce yourself to the person/s you will be working with for 10 weeks.
Location: MRCC Library, Deakin Ave Mildura
Proposed Dates: Each Thursday, Term 2. 16.04.2020 – 18.06.2020
Duration: 10 weeks, 3.45pm-4.45pm
Number of Students: 12 (1:1 ratio desired if possible). An adult facilitator will be present at each session, so you are not alone!
Possible topic areas the group will cover:
- Learn how to use your computer, Tablet, or Mobile phone
- Order groceries and other goods online (no credit card details to be shared)
- Access Medicare and Centrelink online (no sharing of personal ID)
- Use Skype and Facetime to stay connected to family and friends
Another facilitator will cover topics such as internet fraud and scams.
It is important that you speak confidently and offer clear instructions while reassuring your partner. Patience will also be a virtue and an asset, as it may take several repeated steps for the person to complete a task that you have mastered!
Please consider this great opportunity. There are many benefits for both you and the mature person. Let me know if you are interested in committing to the program. You will receive Community Service hours for this activity.

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY
Students enrolled in VCE Plus choose a pair of first year university subjects to study whilst completing Year 12 (one subject per semester). VCE Plus is offered at all La Trobe campuses and subjects are delivered online, face‑to‑face, or a combination of both. For more information please follow the link or call 1300 135 045 or email vceplus@latrobe.edu.au.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
There are currently more than 3000 scholarships available to Australian students. Scholarships can cover an array of costs from tuition fees to living and accommodation costs. Some of these are automatically applied for when students complete the Scholarship Application section of their VTAC Account (Year 12 Students). We suggest investigating options early because the amount of information to get through and the number of applications to fill can be overwhelming if left to the last minute.
For more information, please take the time to explore the following links.
