Psychology Lunch

On Tuesday 20 March, a select group of VCE Psychology students had lunch with Nicole and Glenn, two psychologists from a local practice. Nicole and Glenn shared their experiences of working in psychology. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about the profession, as work experience at psychology clinics is not possible.

Areas of conversation included:

the balance between work and home

self-care and support when working with difficult cases

job opportunities in psychology

pathways to becoming a psychologist

We thank Nicole and Glenn for sharing their experiences, and thank the local community for providing opportunities for our students to explore different professions by engaging with the school. If you are interested in discussing careers with our students, or hosting students for work experience, please contact Mr Taig at: taig.brendan.b@edumail.vic.gov.au

University Lunchtime Presentations

Universities from across Victoria are visiting SCHS to discuss course options with our students. Swinburne, Monash and ACU have visited the school this term during lunch. La Trobe, Deakin, RMIT, Victoria University, ANU and the University of Melbourne are booked to visit over the following two terms.

We thanks students for the wonderful turnout at these events so far this year. As you can see from the image below, we filled the auditorium with our recent presentation.

We encourage students to learn about all of their study options before making informed decisions about their study/career pathway. You can view the details of upcoming events by visiting the SCHS Careers Website. This website is custom built to offer tailored information for our students.

Year 10 Alumni Panel

On Monday 19 March, a panel of SCHS alumni visited the school to share their experiences of VCE and university study with Year 10 students. Devika, Jacqui, Nicholas and Elif provided advice about:

Selecting VCE subjects

Managing the workload and pressure of VCE

Transitioning from high school to university

Finding employment and building a career

The honesty and openness of the panel was greatly appreciated, as it allowed the Year 10 students to gain a real insight into the next steps of education.

Alumni are strongly encouraged to complete the Alumni Survey. By completing the survey you can remain connected to the school, and help build a strong alumni network.

Student Wellbeing and Support

2018 will be a big year for some, particularly those in Year 12, so it’s important remember that support is available for those who need it. Ms. Paye, Josh, and Dru are available for a confidential chat about anything that might be getting in the way of enjoying school, and achieving future goals. This might be stress, worries about studies, feeling low in mood more often than usual, and issues with friends and/or family. We had well over 100 students come to us last year, and no problem was too big or small, so please don’t feel that any problem is silly or not worth talking about. Everything we chat about is completely confidential, so no one has to know what we discussed. There are occasional exceptions to this, but we like to discuss these with students in more detail when we first meet.

Students can arrange to meet with us by either visiting us directly at our offices, talking to a teacher, or by clicking here. (You can also find the link under the star on Compass). Students don’t have to tell teachers anything about why they want to speak to us, but teachers can point them in our direction, and even organise a catch up with us. Parents and students are also more than welcome to contact us on the school’s phone number, or at wellbeing@suzannecoryhs.vic.edu.au regarding any worries or concerns they have about their child.

Take care and enjoy the break before Term 2!
