International Women's Day Breakfast

On Wednesday the 7th of March, a number of Suzanne Cory High School students attended the annual International Women’s Day Breakfast at Crown Palladium. Seated amongst adults of different respective professions and other high school students, the morning consisted of a diverse range of panelists varying from Andy Penn, the CEO of Telstra, to businesswoman and media personality, Husna Pasha, discussing the economic, political and social achievements of women today.

Personally, listening to the progress of female migrants within Australia helped me to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. Along with the delicious breakfast, the morning provided an opportunity for the students of Suzanne Cory High School to unite and network with other charitable organisations working towards improving the lives of women not only within Australia, but globally.

It was great to see our school participating in an event that was working towards encouraging more women leaders and achieving a more balanced community where we all respect each other.

The students and teachers of Suzanne Cory were empowered by all speakers, and I truly hope the school’s involvement in such events continues.

Relay For Life

This term has been quite busy for the citizenship captains, with organising the many different charity events which the school has taken part of. The main event which they have spent countless hours organising this term was Relay for Life 2018. This year we had over 120 people participants from our school which meant that we had to split into two camps and had two separate batons racing around the field.

The event didn't start off too well as we had torrential rain which made it especially hard to set up the marquees but there were some fantastic students who came and helped and pushed through to make sure that everything was in place for a fun -filled 24 hours. Unfortunately, this didn't end up being the case as the event was cancelled at 3 am due to the extreme winds which made it unsafe for us to continue.

The citizenship captains would like to say thank you to everyone who came and supported the cause because this year we raised over $7000 which all went to cancer research and support which is an amazing feat that everyone should be proud of. We would also like to thank the parents and family members who drove down to Hoppers Lane at 3 in the morning and anyone who took other people home to make sure they had a place to stay the rest of the night. Most importantly we would like to thank Ms Cook for her continued support that she has given us and helping us ensure that the event ran smoothly.

CodeMasters Competition

On the 15th of March, Shaurya K, Junqi Y, Jaskaran S, Luna Y, and Ryan S competed at the CodeMasters Competition at The University of Melbourne.  Students were asked to collaborate to solve a series of problems by writing their own computer programs, coding them in the language of their choice. Teams had a time limit of 2.5 hours.  All students demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship with place being awarded to Luna and Ryan. Well done everyone!

Outdoor Education Year 10 Elective

This term was the first term that the year 10 Outdoor Education elective has ran. The students learnt about the different types of environments, media’s influence on the environment, risk and minimal impact on the environment.

As part of the elective students worked with Land care in the Cheetham creek area assisting with weeding and plant identification. The students had fun and it was great to see them giving back to the community.
