Specialist Reports

The web is a great place to learn, be creative and stay connected. However, with one in five young Australians found to have been cyber bullied – and the many other challenges young people face online – it’s important we invest in giving our community the skills they need to be responsible digital citizens.

That’s why we’re participating in the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s National eSmart Week along with hundreds of other communities, to show our commitment to building an eSmart Australia.

Throughout the week students will participate in activities helping them to be good digital citizens, as well as how to stay safe online.

We encourage all families to discuss this at home. Head to the Cyber Safety Project for some great ideas to do at home; https://www.cybersafetyproject.com.au/parents.html

Library News

BOOK WEEK

I’d like to say (although I’m not involved in organising the parade) that so many of the Book Week Parade costumes looked amazing , showed a lot of creativity and lots and lots and lots of them came from BOOKS! So thank you to the organisers, students and parents for making a fabulous parade.

On the subject of looking amazing, do have a look at the Magical Library and Phoenix posters painted by Puja, mother of Pragya in Grade 6, with her helpers including Pragya. These are on the library and celebrate the Book Week Theme of ‘Reading is my Secret Power’.

You can also come in and have a giggle at some of our silly book titles on the inside poster. This poster was created with the assistance of Liv the Library Captain, other ‘library regulars’ and the after-hours crew: Sarah, Ant, Stu and Will.

In other Library News we have the Good News and the Not so Good News

Not So Good News: Overdue and Damaged Books

We are seeing more damaged books this year than ever before. For many, many years Old Orchard Primary students from Prep to Grade 6 have handled books with care and they have lasted for years: and a book should last for years. Please encourage your students to treat books with the same degree of care as they would a glass, just as you look after someone else’s belongings with extra care.

Overdues: students are asking me daily for books they have been waiting for, and these books are sometimes quite or very overdue. We will be sending home overdue notes on Tuesdays. You can drop off overdues on any day: there is a new shelf near the front office where we will collect overdues from in the morning with the rest of the daily returns.

Good News: Library Clubs for Grades 3-6

We will be trialling 5 library clubs for Grades 3-6 at recess and lunch -  these will be: Library Poster Making (to illustrate how to use the library etc.); Administration (including overdues); New Books; Drawing & Fan Art ; and Story & Game Writing or Illustration. They will be a bit of a ‘work in progress’ to see which ones work.

Silent reading will continue down the non-fiction end. So these clubs will be quiet!

Supplies for the Art Room

Hi Parents and Friends,

We are looking for a few supplies for the Art room that you may have at home and be happy to donate. The supplies we need include newspapers (to cover the tables when painting etc.), clean meat trays, thin cardboard from cereal boxes and cheezel boxes etc, felt, wool and decorative buttons with interesting textures to print into our clay creations.

At this stage we don’t need any more  egg cartons or glass jars and we can’t use toilet paper rolls.

Thanks for your help. Any donations can be left at the school front office or in the Art room in the donations box under the table.

Kind regards

Heidi Kelly, Art Teacher
