Spanish Vocab #2

Our first lesson started in the previous edition of our newsletter. We hope that it inspired you to learn some basic greetings in Spanish. For those of you that were inspired take the quiz below to see what you remembered. (Answers at the bottom of the page).

1. How do you say 'Good Morning' in Spanish?

2. Until what daily event do you use 'Buenas tardes'?

3. What abbreviated greeting can you use throughout the day and night?

Our second lesson focus on asking someone how they are.

¿Qué tál?(kwe-tal) -How are you?

This expression is commonly used in Spain.

¿Cómo estás? (komo es'tas) - How are you?

This expression is commonly used in Latin America.

Estoy muy bien. (es'toy mui bi en) - I am very good.

Estoy bien. (es'toy bi en) - I am good.

Estoy feliz.  (es'toy fe lease) - I am happy.

Estoy triste.  (es'toy tris te) -  I am sad.

¡OJO! You may have noticed that in Spanish we use questions marks at the start and end of a question. We also have accents above some letters that means you emphasise the sound of that letter.

Quiz Answers: 1. Buenos días 2. Until sunset 3. ¡Buenas!

2018/2019 Granada IES - Coburg HS Exchange Program

Our new exchange program with our sister school: IES La Madraza in Granada, Spain will commence at the start of November, 15 Spanish students and their two teachers will arrive at Coburg HS and stay with us for two weeks. During this time, our students will have the opportunity to get to know the visiting high school students from Spain and practise some of their Spanish both during and outside of class time. We are now calling for host families that would like to host a sister school student. The visiting exchange students are between 15-16 years and are very excited to be visiting Australia. It is important to note that when considering hosting a student it is not expected that they will have their own room. The exchange student would live with you and your family/guardian to take part in and understand our culture and language. Please also note that any families that are willing to have an exchange student will need to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC). For any more questions or to host a student please email: jessica.griffiths@coburg.vic.edu.au.

On Tuesday 21st August we will be hosting an information night for any students and their families/guardians who wish to travel to Granada in April 2019. Any students who will be in Yr 9,10 and 11 studying Spanish in 2019 are eligible to apply for a place on the exchange. Students wishing to participate are strongly encouraged to come along to the information night to learn more about the program and how it may compliment their current Spanish learning. To register for the event please use this link or email: jessica.griffiths@coburg.vic.edu.au.

¡Una empanada por favor!- Year 9 & 10 Spanish excursion

What a fantastic opportunity for our year 9 and 10 Spanish classes to go on an excursion to eat and hang out at a local Latin American restaurant ‘Neruda’s Brunswick’. We took the tram to this authentic Albion St eatery, and used all the Spanish learnt so far. “Una empanada, por favor”. “Perdón, ¿tienen Inca Cola?”, “¿la humita es muy grande?”, “¿Cuánto es?”. The service staff spoke only Spanish, were very friendly and super impressed with the students’ speaking abilities. Gus, the owner, told us the meaning of the peace mural painted outside,“It is a child offering the sacred coca leaves of the Andes to all passers by, it is to remind everyone that peace is above all things”. The food was lovely and the drinks were super sweet as expected. Everyone had a good time and got a taste for the rich Latin American culture right here on our doorstep. Since then, students have told me they have gone back for coffee and food with family or friends, wanting to show them what they have learnt. This is the beauty of language, it opens doors to new experiences and broadens perspectives.

Next stop: The Melbourne International Film Festival at Fed Square, to watch a documentary about two Honduran immigrants living in Mexico . No time for dull moments!
