Year 12 Study Skills Camp

On the 6-8th of February, the Year 12 cohort, along with some staff, made our way to Kyneton to attend the PGL Adventure Camp to commence the annual Year 12 Study Skills Camp.

The camp was split into two focus areas, these consisting of teambuilding activities and study skills/habits. On two out of the three days that we were there, the cohort was divided into groups where we participated in various team building activities, which either consisted of canoeing, raft building, the flying fox or initiative games.

During these activities, each group were required to use numerous skill sets in order to successfully complete each given task. These activities were not only challenging, but it also pushed many people outside of their comfort zone (and out of their canoes and into the water), as many of us were made to work with many different people we typically don’t. Though, being pushed outside of our comfort zones and engaging in these tasks taught us the overall benefit that teamwork and effective communication have.

The remaining day was dedicated to the study skills side of the camp. Though this side to the camp was evidently less exciting than going into the water with poorly made rafts and wearing uncomfortably tight harnesses on the Flying Fox, it was equally as beneficial.

With the help of our dedicated staff, they set up several stations that will be highly beneficial for our journey throughout Year 12. The stations were divided into smaller focus areas, these being mediation practices, memory techniques, organisational skills, goal setting and ATAR notes. These techniques gave us the opportunity to not only help us prepare for our final year of schooling, but also to make us realise how unified and how supported we are by our staff. Though, it also gave our teachers the opportunity to see how many of us still haven’t completed the holiday homework… whoops.

Overall the Year 12 study skills camp was a success. It taught us Year 12’s the fundamental skills that will be required to get through this upcoming year, but mostly it taught us how important the people around you are and how beneficial it is to have a support system. I’m sure we are all very appreciative and are grateful to have had this opportunity to bond with one another and learn these new skills. Thank you to everyone involved in the planning and delivery of the camp.

Access Monash Tutors Excursion

On 19th on February 2019, students who had signed up to be part of the mentoring program attended the induction day at Monash University to be paired with appropriate mentors.

A total of 29 Year 11 and 12 students visited the Access  Monash Mentee Induction at Monash University (Clayton) where we were invited to get together with several other schools and explore and experience the excitement of being a university student.

While we were there we all participated in two activities, one including the facts about the past years and how they have succeeded in their program and getting the chance of meeting some of our mentors that we will be helping us out in our studies.

The other activity was learning how to build a positive connection with our mentors where we were given a scenario to act out. We also learnt how to behave and treat ourselves and the mentors as they are also studying and they can experience as much pressure as we get some times.

Overall, it was a true pleasure to receive this opportunity and get to explore our futures beforehand. It was great to be more involved not just with our school and fellow students but getting the chance to meet several other schools and finding new friends.

Thanks to Ms Rackham and Mr Shinkfield who accompanied us on the excursion and will support the Access Monash Tutoring Program this year.
