Assistant Principal's Report

A very big welcome back to all students, staff and families for Term 3.

Our start to the term has been a busy one, with students already engaging with a range of rich learning experiences both inside and outside of the College.  Our first few weeks of term will see students from Years 7 to 12 have many different opportunities to reinforce their in class learning, including film screenings and lectures for English texts, seeing Science in action at the Epworth Sleep Centre, Model United Nations (running in both French AND English) and lots of sporting activities.  We also have our annual Multicultural Assembly which sees a range of students and staff share their unique cultures with the school and local community, an event that has become a big highlight in the College calendar.

Another whole school event coming up is our College Athletics Carnival on Thursday August 1. This is an important whole school event and it is expected all students attend.  Permission for this event can be given via Compass if it has not already been provided.  We encourage all students (and staff!) to dress in their house colours and even if not the strongest athlete, have a go and participate or cheer on your house.  GO SOMERVILLE!

Furthermore, students and parents/carers can now access Semester 1 reports for their students.  These can be found on Compass and provide families with important information regarding student achievement, as well as information from staff about ways students can continue to improve and grow in their knowledge, understandings and skills across their subjects.  We encourage all students and families to access and download these reports and use these to discuss Semester 1 learning with students at home, as well as use these for our Term 3 Learning Conferences.  Bookings for this important event will be open soon via Compass and we encourage all parents/carers and students to book appointments.

Finally, a major focus on Term 3 is looking towards 2020 and the learning programs for all students.  Over the course of the term, a number of assemblies, events and interviews will be occurring to support students in making their 2020 subject selections.  This process uses an online form that students can access easily via Compass.  Instructions for how to access and complete subject selections will be published on Compass for each year level when it opens.  We ask all students and parents/carers to regularly check the Compass Newsfeed for this important information.  We also strongly suggest all students and families use Compass to access and read the available subject handbooks and contact the relevant staff members if there are any further questions.

We look forward to seeing all of our students using Term 3 to set themselves new learning goals for the semester and striving to not only meet these goals, but really challenge themselves to excel!
