Semester 2 Class Captains
Next week, Monday 12 August, we will induct the Semester 2 Class Captains at Assembly. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Semester 1 Class Captains as they have done a marvellous job. Congratulations to the following students for being appointed as the new Class Captains for Semester 2:
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 15 August from 3.30pm to 8.00pm. The meetings provide time for you to discuss with the teacher how your child is progressing, identify areas for improvement, areas of strength and ways in which to help him/her progress further. It is also an opportunity to discuss learning habits which need to be developed and any social issues which may be affecting your child’s social development.
Please remember that these meetings have set start and finish times. We ask that parents strictly adhere to these times, as one longer meeting has flow on effects across the whole evening. If the time comes for the meeting to conclude and you feel you need to discuss other matters, please tell the teacher that you will email them requesting another meeting time, either before or after school.
By following this protocol, meetings run smoothly and additional matters can be addressed in sufficient time and at everyone’s convenience. I thank you in advance for your support in this matter.

Life Education Program
https://www.lifeeducation.org.au/
As part of our Term 3 Life Skills program, Fairview and Cumberland are having the Life Education mobile classroom visit the College from Tuesday 27 August to Monday 2 September.
The Life Education program helps to facilitate the development of life skills in students. Lessons are always age appropriate and the children will be covering a wide range of health-related topics; ranging from the human body and how it works, healthy eating and nutrition, medicines and drugs, bullying, resilience and social skills. Healthy Harold, the much-loved Life Education giraffe mascot, is always a much-anticipated element of the Life Education visit.
The sessions are always engaging and interactive. They extend and develop the children’s understanding of the topics covered. We are able to further broaden these topics in class both prior to and after the Life Education visit with the student workbooks that are provided. It is important that your child attend this session.
The Life Education Educator will also be providing an information session for parents at the Life Education Van in the staff car park on Tuesday 27 August from 8.30am to 9.00am.
If you have any queries, please contact the relevant Head of School.
Chapel and Assembly
Cumberland Chapel begins at 10.00am every Monday followed by Assembly at 10.30am. Parents are always welcome to attend. Antonio M and Krisy I, our Cumberland Captains lead Assemblies. Each week, a Cumberland class is scheduled to share something that their class has been learning. This week Aaryan K, Eva J, Phoenix P and Avani K from 3A spoke at Assembly and presented a slide show demonstrating the class’s scientific learning on solids and liquids.
Aaryan K
Good morning Cumberland, in our integrated studies unit, we have been learning about solids and liquids. We conducted an experiment to determine what would happen when you heat or cool a substance.
Eva J
We investigated what would happen to chocolate, water, a paper clip, rubbing alcohol and honey. To begin our investigation, we firstly made predictions about what we thought might happen. These were some of our predictions.
Phoenix P
By heating we predicted: Chocolate would melt and water would evaporate. By Cooling we predicted: Honey would harden and rubbing alcohol would freeze. After predicting we began the experiment, noting down observations as we went.
Avani K
We discovered that most of our predictions were correct. One that shocked us all was that rubbing alcohol did not freeze in the freezer, it remained a liquid. Here are some pictures from our experiment, thank you for listening.
Each class is rostered to present at Assembly on the following dates and parents are welcome:
- 12 August - Year 3S
- 19 August - Year 6M
- 26 August - Year 6K
- 2 September - Year 5M
- 9 September - Year 5K
Earth Craft in Year 6
Our class has been participating in a game called Earth Craft. Earth Craft is a great opportunity for students to take control and demonstrate leadership. In the game students are all given a different role they have to do. Earth Craft gives everyone a chance to speak, share ideas and be heard. It also is a great way to socialise and it involves a lot of problem solving and effort. The game is not only very educational, it’s also fun for most students!
Asha S - 6K
As a class, we run Earth Craft once a week. It is a time where we work together to solve challenges in teams. Earth Craft is about real-world problems called ‘Earth Challenges.’ It gives students the chance to solve problems just like world leaders who govern the world. Each continent is a team with a Leader, Treasurer and Foreign Affairs Minister. There are more teams, including The Fates who run the game and decide if the Earth Challenges are solved or not. Other teams are Anonymous, UN, Palestine and the World Bank, each serving a role in the game. For example, the World Bank organise all the money of the world. Another example is Anonymous which is a group of online hackers who want the world to be an equal place.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update
This year in 5K, we are participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (S.A.K.G) Program. Last week we made spring rolls in our cooking groups. It was very challenging as my group did not follow the rules and failed to create the dipping sauce so we had to make a new one with all the correct measurements. It was quite spicy as we added chilli into our dipping sauce. Also, the pastry was very thin and we had to be very careful with it as we might rip it. In the end, our spring rolls were tasty and everyone enjoyed tasting them. Cooking is so much fun in a group; the College is very privileged to have a kitchen so that we can learn to cook and try new things. I hope next week we will create something fantastic just like the spring rolls and the dipping sauce.
Christina M - 5K
This term our class is involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (S.A.K.G) Program. The program encourages students to work cooperatively and share ideas. One of the highlights of this class is cooking! Last week we cooked spring rolls and this week we cooked soup. We have my mum and many other volunteers that help. The program is great for learning to work together. Everyone in my group is involved in all activities, including myself. I personally love the S.A.K.G Program and cannot wait for the next session.
Malik H - 5K
Community Service
Please support our Year 6 Community Service Captains, Jayda C and Gabrielle G, with their fundraiser. They are raising money for the Smith Family Foundation to support families in need. All Cumberland students have the opportunity to guess how many lollies are in the jar for a small price and the closest guess will win the lollies. Thank you!
Parent Helpers Information Session
The College is offering Fairview and Cumberland School parents the opportunity to partake in the Parent Helpers’ Information Session if you missed the opportunity to attend in February. It will outline the program requirements and how parents can actively be involved in College life. Parents who have not attended either sessions cannot assist in the classroom. The session is scheduled for Thursday 29 August, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the College Library. Interested participants can email
admin@aitkencollege.edu.au by Friday 16 August.
