Galway Debating

We are proud and happy to announce that our Junior and Intermediate Debating teams have won the respective divisions of the 2019 competition. Year 8 students: Malinsa H, Angel J and Kamryn D are our Junior winners with Year 9 students: Monica C, Sophie H and Sofia C argued beautifully on the day – congratulations to these eloquent and mighty champions! We are so proud of you. We are also proud of our Senior team (Helena R, Aaron R and India L) and our other Junior (Poppy B, Deborah B and Abhay M) and Intermediate (Hayley R, Chloe G and Maddison C) teams who all made the Finals.

What a successful season of Debating we have all had! We cannot wait to see what is in store for Galway Debating in 2020 – student participation in this event is always so inspiring!

VCE Englishes

A note to students moving from Year 10 to Year 11 and their Parents/Guardians. There are three Englishes available to study as part of the VCE: English, English Language and English Literature. English offers a beautiful bridge from the study in Year 10 to VCE and fulfills many a prerequisite for tertiary study; English Language is quite niche and offers learners a more ‘Linguistics’ based course and Literature allows for a gorgeous foray into texts and an engagement with them including inspiring and creating opinions and interpretations based on them.

It has been a pleasure to speak with the Year 10 students as they decide which English and/or combination of two Englishes will complement their VCE course best. The presentation at the beginning of Term 3 in Brookhill Assembly on the subjects is on My Aitken (in the Year 10 Topics page, under ‘Subject Selection’). I encourage the Year 10 students to speak with me further in order to choose the English (or combination of Englishes) that best matches their Year 11 course.
