Bucket Fillers and Bucket Dippers
As we continue our work on understanding the ‘How Full is Your Bucket?’ philosophy, students are learning about how our interactions with others either fill or dip from each other’s buckets. How we feel or behave at any given moment is dependent on how full our bucket is. When we are happy, energetic and joyful, our outlook is positive and we can show tolerance, forgiveness and understanding in order to support those around us. When are buckets are empty, we feel the opposite. Our energy levels are low, we have a negative outlook and find it difficult to support others.
When we are feeling low and our bucket is empty, at times it can be easier to take from others in the hopes it will make us feel better. In reality, this is not the case. Dipping from others inevitably makes the person doing the dipping feel even worse. However, when we fill the buckets of others, we can in turn fill our own by giving sincere praise, showing concerned interest and giving compliments. Even something as simple as a smile can have a positive impact on those around us.
At Assembly, students identified bucket fillers and dippers. The lists could be endless, but looking at simple actions and putting them into the context of our school helped students identify all the good they are doing already. I encourage you to celebrate the times your children are making good choices and putting in a conscious effort to fill the buckets of others.
“The task then, for a concerned human being who is striving to become more pro-life and more positive, is to exercise every opportunity to help fill another’s bucket and to become intently alert to the spontaneously negative use of his own dipper.” John E. Valusek, Ph.D
Life Education Program
https://www.lifeeducation.org.au/
As part of our Term 3 Life Skills program, Fairview and Cumberland are having the Life Education mobile classroom visit the College from Tuesday 27 August to Monday 2 September.
The Life Education program helps to facilitate the development of life skills in students. Lessons are always age appropriate and the children will be covering a wide range of health-related topics; ranging from the human body and how it works, healthy eating and nutrition, medicines and drugs, bullying, resilience and social skills. Healthy Harold, the much-loved Life Education giraffe mascot, is always a much-anticipated element of the Life Education visit.
The sessions are always engaging and interactive. They extend and develop the children’s understanding of the topics covered. We are able to further broaden these topics in class both prior to and after the Life Education visit with the student workbooks that are provided. It is important that your child attend this session.
The Life Education Educator will also be providing an information session for parents at the Life Education Van in the staff car park on Tuesday 27 August from 8.30am to 9.00am.
If you have any queries, please contact the relevant Head of School.
Community Service
Please support our Year 6 Community Service Captains, Jayda C and Gabrielle G, with their fundraiser. They are raising money for the Smith Family Foundation to support families in need. All Fairview students have the opportunity to guess how many lollies are in the jar for a small price and the closest guess will win the lollies. Thank you!
Parent Helpers Information Session
The College is offering Fairview and Cumberland School parents the opportunity to partake in the Parent Helpers’ Information Session if you missed the opportunity to attend in February. It will outline the program requirements and how parents can actively be involved in College life. Parents who have not attended either sessions cannot assist in the classroom. The session is scheduled for Thursday 29 August, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the College Library. Interested participants can email admin@aitkencollege.edu.au by Friday 16 August.
