EMERGING OCCUPATIONS

The National Skills Commission (NSC) has developed a data-driven approach to identify emerging occupations within Australia. By identifying emerging skills and looking at how these skills change existing jobs, we are able to identify emerging or new jobs in the labour market.

New occupations often emerge as a result of the need to adapt and learn new skills.  The current COVID-19 crisis has seen situations such as manufacturers having to learn new techniques to make unfamiliar, in demand products, and restaurant owners having to quickly develop or enhance their skills in e‑commerce, for example.

The diagram below illustrates some emerging occupations.  Students are encouraged to browse and learn more about emerging occupations go to the National Skills Commission website https://www.nationalskillscommission.gov.au/introduction

SOUTH COAST ACADEMY:  LIVE HAIR AND BEAUTY CLASS

SCA is a local registered training organisation that teaches the skills in hair and beauty and has generously given up their time to host a live Hair and Beauty Class for our students via zoom. This is another pilot program organised with Jenny Watts our Senior Project Officer for Regional Industry Education Partnerships Training Services NSW.

Interested Year 9 and 10 LIHS students brought in their own materials for makeup and hair equipment and logged in directly with different teachers at South Coast Academy. Using a model, the basic techniques of applying makeup suitable for interview was demonstrated and our students either demonstrated these skills on themselves or a friend.  The same process then followed for the hair section and our students were able to ask questions about the industry and different tips to perfect.

This is another innovative way of promoting VET pathways into hairdressing and beauty  and we are grateful for the opportunity. A number of the Year 10 students had already put in External VET applications for courses for 2021.

YEAR 12 INFORMATION

Students are heading quickly into the final steps of secondary school. Along the way I have been working with students in their applications to university, applying for positions both casual work, traineeships and apprenticeships. It is a busy process and rewarding when students actively participate in their future planning.

All students that applied to Early Admission at university of Wollongong have received feedback and, depending on the student, they will have received conditional offers, phone interviews, and activation events or alternate course offers.

Myself and the R2Go program coordinator are available for assistance until the end of the year for any Year 12 students. I wish them all the very best on their next phase of education and planning their future.

Preparing students for interviews has been an ongoing process all of this term as positions for 2021 are advertised early. It is important that students keep looking for all possibilities and one place they can be aware of entry level positions is on the Lake Illawarra High School Careers Facebook page.

LAKE ILLAWARRA HIGH CAREERS WEBSITE
