PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

As a very different looking Term 3 draws to a conclusion, I would like to acknowledge the resilience that the staff and students have displayed at Lake Illawarra High.

While many of the activities that make high school such an exciting experience have unfortunately been cancelled, postponed or changed, our school community has none the less done its very best to continue on with a sense of making things as “normal” as possible. I understand that many of the extra-curricular activities in the areas of academia, sport, the arts, and leadership have been replaced by on-line alternatives and this has not been ideal. I also acknowledge that parents and caregivers have had very limited opportunities to celebrate with their youngsters and the school regarding some of the outstanding achievements that they have made. All of us are hoping that Term 4 will see things improve so that we can once again return to our old and much loved routines.

We have learnt a great deal during this year and I have been so proud of some of the initiatives that have been developed. Such as the advent of our Student News Team, the creation of our Literacy Hub, the introduction of iSTEM into the school, the continued enthusiasm shown by our staff in the development of their skills in the use of technology. This has certainly improved the engagement levels of our students in the classroom.

This leads me on to our wonderful HSC students. They have been brilliant role models for our student body. Despite everything that has been thrown at them they have maintained their positive attitudes and efforts and have gone out of their way to ensure that everyone in the school maintains this positive mindset. For this I thank them very much and I remain optimistic that next term we will be able to celebrate their remarkable achievements with the appropriate gusto!

To our parent community thank you for the great support you have given our school over the last three months. It is so very much appreciated by everyone,  and especially me!

Finally, I would like to thank all of the staff at Lake Illawarra High for your tremendous support of our students during the course of this term. There have been challenges, but I am so proud of what we as a school have achieved.

To our whole Lake Illawarra High School community, please enjoy your break, stay safe and we look forward to what promises to be an exciting Term 4.

DEPUTIES' DESK

As we rapidly approach the end of a most extraordinary term, can I take a moment to thank the entire school community, our parents and carers, all students, and all staff for the manner in which we have coped so well with the difficulties of the last few months. Since the full return to school last term, students have worked diligently to catch up on lost time and are to be congratulated for their efforts.

One group, in particular, will be ending as of Friday Week 1 next term, their schooling altogether at Lake Illawarra High School, and we would like to congratulate our graduating Year 12 students on the completion of their schooling. We encourage all our Year 12 students to prepare thoroughly for their upcoming HSC examinations and to actively seek the assistance of their teachers if needed as they prepare to sit those examinations, I would like to also remind all Year 12 students and their parents, that they still have one week left of high school life (Week 1 next term). Year 12 students should ask as many questions as they need to of their teachers to fill any gaps they may have with their understanding. The school has recently purchased an exciting new resource for our senior students, Edrolo. This platform is directly linked to subject syllabuses, includes many HSC style questions, and has lesson recaps from expert teachers. From our recent Trial HSC examinations, we found that the students who accessed their Edrolo accounts in their preparation for the exams were able to maximise their results and understanding.

There is much excitement to see what level of achievement our Year 12 students can achieve and we hope that every student is happy and proud of their achievements at Lake Illawarra High School. It is with great pride that we farewell these students and we hope and trust that each and every student, and their families, will always identify as being part of our extended Lake Family.

Finally, we would like to remind students, and ask for the support from their families, that all students should be attending in school uniform each day. The culture and mindset that students bring to school has clear linkages with how they approach the day both behaviourally and academically. We would like to remind students that wearing school uniform is a compulsory requirement at our school and it has become apparent that some students are choosing to wear multicoloured jumpers or football shorts and this is unacceptable. We are striving hard to create an environment that is conducive to learning and one where students get a year’s growth in their learning from a year’s worth of attendance.

We hope that students have a safe and restful break and we look forward to the commencement of Term 4. As always, if you have any questions and would like to speak to myself or Mr. Meizer, please feel free to do so.
