"So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall." – Roald Dahl

Happy Holidays

Hoping everyone can find some time to escape into a book, to explore the wild mind of an author, or follow a curious creature on an adventure.

Holidays will be a great time to chat with your child/children about their dress-up for the parade on Friday 23rd, October (Week 2).

Here are some hints of who I will be;

*I am a character in a book which has many wild creatures within it,

*I wear a crown; and

*I like to go on adventures but I like to be home for supper.

Can you guess who I will be?

BOOK WEEK 2020

Monday 19 to Friday 23 October  TERM 4

"Curious Creatures, Wild Minds"

Students have received a note regarding the Book Fair and Book Week. Please ensure you have sighted and read this note as it has many details about both events.

What's been happening in the library this term:

The students this term have been busily voting for the winning book, from the shortlisted titles in each section of the Children's Book Council of Australia Awards.

We have read many of the books in lessons but it has been up to the students individually to decide which book they think will win the coveted award of Book of the Year in each section. Of course, many factors go toward choosing a text as the winner but nothing beats a story which really captures your heart and mind and that is why many a heated discussion occurs amongst the judges at this time.

The results will be released in Week 1(October 16) next term.

Students who chose the winning book will receive a treat.

The categories we selected from include:

*BOOK OF THE YEAR: YOUNGER READERS

*BOOK OF THE YEAR: EARLY CHILDHOOD

*PICTURE BOOK OF THE YEAR

*Here are some points we considered when deciding on our selection:

  • Analysis of the covers of the book, front, and back.
  • Read the back blurb.
  • View the illustrations and text.
  • Did you like the story?
  • If it's a chapter book read a section.

A competition has also been running to guess the characters from the letters of the Book Week theme. Have a go at home.

Results next term.

Holiday Activity

Here is the website https://cbca.org.au/ if you would like to browse the books. Click on the links to view short videos from the authors and illustrators recounting their journey through the construction of the text. Yr 5 and 6 found "The Glimme" and "The Good Son" particularly captivating.

Perhaps as a family over the holidays, you may wish to have your own vote.

I'm sure when the results are released much interesting discussion and debate will ensue.
