The 2020 Age Athletics Championship

A reminder to all Senior School students and their parents that the College has secured the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC) competition Arena on Saturday 19 September from 8.00am till 2.00pm. Those boys who are devoted to and have a passion for Athletics will have the opportunity to contest the College Age Championships.

As indicated previously, certain protocols will need to be adhered to in order to allow one parent/carer per competitor to attend and support. This is on the understanding that supporters use specific walkways, sit in seating bays away from the students and take their son away from the venue immediately after his last event. Please note that relevant details relating to the protocols and procedures set down for the carnival will be distributed to the College community in due course.

Parents and students are advised that the maximum number of people within the venue at any one time is 500. That being the case, Mr Mackie (MIC Athletics and Cross-Country) has set up an electronic registering system which enables prospective participants to indicate their intent to contest particular events. Students may enter their preferences by clicking on the Events button below but only after they have consulted their parents:

Boys have until 9.00am Monday 14 September to register their interest.

Given the limitation on numbers, boys and parents are advised that priority will go to those boys who ordinarily represent the College in Athletics annually. Boys wishing to participate in this event should be fairly confident in placing in the top 8 of their age group.

Swimming Sign-ups

Boys and their parents are advised that Swimming Squad sign-ups will be held on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September during the first half of lunch in the Hickey driveway. All parents and boys are to ensure that discussion takes place at home prior to a boy registering his name and intention to swim for the College.

New Basketball Strips and Hiring

I am pleased to inform the College Basketball fraternity that an updated playing strip was developed during the off-season. This new Basketball strip looks very similar to the current design but also features the College crest and “St Patrick’s” on the front panel.

The new Basketball strip is made from different material to the current playing strip and all indicators suggest that the boys will benefit from and enjoy playing in the new garment. Details relating to the fabric are as follows:

“Air tech is a sublimated synthetic fabrication that allows colour to be printed on the garment for a fresh colour fast look. The fabric, like all new synthetic sports technology has movement, wick away sweat technology and has a softer touch than previous garment”.

A change in the playing strip will also come with a change in the way boys acquire their playing singlet. To get around the ongoing problem of boys purchasing singlets while avoiding doubling up of the numbering, the College has decided to move to a hiring system. In short, each team will have a full quota of playing singlets at the commencement of the season. Boys will then be issued a singlet which they must hang on to for the remainder of the season. A charge of $20.00 will go on their Term 1 fee account. The singlet is to be returned (clean) to the coach at the end of the season. Failure to return the singlet will result in parents having to replace the missing singlet in time for the following season. Please note that boys are still expected to purchase their own playing shorts and socks.

Given the new playing strip is quite similar in design to the current one, boys will be able to use their current playing shorts in season 2020-21 if they would like to do so. All boys playing Basketball will be expected to wear the new shorts from the commencement of season 2021-22.

Junior School boys will be commence wearing the new strip as of Term 1 2021 with a similar hiring system in place.

Senior School Winter Sport Photos

Parents are advised that the Senior School winter sports photos will be taken on Thursday 17 September in the College Hall. Boys will be informed of the photo timetable via their Homeroom noticeboards.

I would kindly ask that parents ensure that their son’s Winter sports gear is clean and in good condition for the photos. Details relating to the purchasing of photos online will be forwarded to parents via the Especean soon.

Please note that under no circumstance are boys to borrow gear from other boys if they have forgotten their own playing uniform. Boys will simply not take part in the photo if they have forgotten their gear. Parents are advised that they will not be allowed to leave sports uniforms at Reception in the event their son forgets his gear.

Senior School Winter Sports Awards

Given the current COVID-19 situation, the annual winter sport presentation evenings have had to be cancelled. As many would be aware, the season was cut short but not before the boys managed to squeeze in 7 weeks of training/trials and at least 4 fixtures. Due to the shortness of the season, participation certificates will not be distributed for the 2020 AFL, Rugby, Football and Tennis seasons. That said, the College is in the process of ordering Team and Best and Fairest Awards which will be distributed to boys in front of their peers upcoming PCP periods.

Homework Club

Please be advised that Homework Club will not be operating on Monday 14 September due a staff meeting taking place. Homework Club will resume the following day and continue through to Thursday 24 September. The service will re-open on Monday 12 October, day 1 of Term 4.

Basketball Season 2020 – Skill Development Camps

The Basketball season is well and truly underway with trials commencing this week. The number of students who have signed up for the season is most pleasing and in time, I hope the numbers continue to grow as we find the facilities to accommodate such growth. The Basketball fraternity has been working very closely with a number of outside providers in order to better prepare our boys for the season ahead. One such provider, “Number 1 Draft Pick Basketball” has agreed to run a series of Basketball Camps during the upcoming holidays for our students only in the College Gymnasium. The links below should provide parents and boys with all the information needed prior to signing up for the camps. Please click on the link of the relevant age group for more information:

Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October – Ages 10 to 14

Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 October – Ages 15 to 17

These Basketball Camps are designed to teach players the Game Skills for Game Results and now is the perfect time for boys to start executing their skills. While the camps focus on teaching the fundamentals of the game in a fun, safe and competitive environment, they are also designed to teach boys the values and skills they need to be a better Basketball player. Players acquire this appreciation through the use of drill and station work along with full court games. Boys are invited to work out with the new First V Coaches, Roderick Proctor and Danny Kordahi, along with other professional coaching staff.

Please note that no student or parents within the College’s Basketball fraternity should feel obliged to register for the camps and furthermore, these camps will not be treated as trials for team selections.
