Cyber Safety

Recently I was provided with another opportunity to explain to our year 5 and 6 students, the importance of understanding Cyber Safety protocols when using social media from home with friends from school, and beyond.

Despite age limit restrictions, some students continue to have access to messaging and social media apps, such as ‘TikTok’, ‘SnapChat’ and ‘Instagram’. Users of Snapchat can post comments and images which are not stored as a ‘feed’, so the receivers cannot record any safety risks easily, if they arise. Some features of SnapChat which can be a risk factor include; Snap Map- which allows friends see each others location on a map, and Discover, which offers age-inappropraite content. I encourage parents who are considering allowing underage use of certain apps by their primary aged children, to carefully reseach the safety concerns outlined on many sites online.

Children who are having online cyber safety concerns can report these at school, or online at: https://www.esafety.gov.au/
