Red Room Poetry 2022 POEM FOREST competition
As part of the John XXIII College English program, in Term 3, all Year 7 students entered the Red Room Poetry 2022 POEM FOREST competition. The competition invites students to use their words to make positive climate action. Thanks to the Australian Botanic Garden, for every nature poem that was submitted, a tree is planted. This year, over 5700 poems were submitted nationally.
Alyssa Mignacca in Year 7 has been one of 11 students in the Years 7 to Year 9 category to have her poem shortlisted for the 2022 POEM FOREST final, and is in the running for a $500 cash prize. Alyssa’s poem, ‘Eternal Dusk’, is a stirring call to action that warns that humanity is ‘balancing on the perilous precipice of being gone’, and encourages us to ‘change our ways in our final hours of comforting light’.
You can register to watch the announcement of the winning poems on Thursday 17 November through the Red Room Poetry website, and Alyssa’s poem can be read here https://redroompoetry.org/student-poems/eternal-dusk/

Year 11 Italian Immersion Day
On Sunday 30 October, three keen Year 11 Italian ATAR students; Maggie Costa Shrubsall, Delia Lamattina, Laura Rutherford together with Prof Polizzi, joined other Year 11 Italian ATAR students from a range of high schools for a jammed packed Italian-filled day. The day was hosted by the Western Australia Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI) and included a series of mini lectures presented in Italian on their Unit 2 ATAR topics that compared the Australian culture with aspects of the Italian culture. Throughout the day, the students had multiple opportunities to join students and different teachers to practice their speaking skills as well as other vocabulary and listening activities. The day was celebrated in true Italian style, with a typical Italian merenda; panettone e succo di frutta and at lunch they enjoyed authentic Italian pizza and arancini. It was a great opportunity in preparation for their oral and written examinations coming up in the next few weeks.

Sustainability News - National Recycling Week Initiative
As part of National Recycling Week, which commences on Monday 7 November, the College will be collecting pre-owned sporting equipment that isn’t used any more or has be grown out of. All donations will be given to FAIRGAME, an organisation that distributes sporting equipment to disadvantaged schools and communities in Australia.
Please make sure any items you donate are in good, clean, useable condition.
They are able to replace laces, insoles and grips on racquets/bats but if the item is otherwise broken or worn out they will not be able to give it to someone else to use.
Please be mindful that equipment design and materials continue to evolve and improve over the years, so if it is a vintage piece it is unlikely to be suitable for current use.
They are always in need of:
- AFL footballs, soccer balls, basketball, cricket bats
- Footy boots
- Soccer shin pads
- Runners/sneakers
- Tee ball bats, mitts and balls
- Track shoes
- Cones
- Boxing gloves/focus pads
- Dodgeballs
- Hula hoops
- Large sports bags in good condition (eg. Cricket bags)
There will be two collection bins placed outside student reception for students and staff to place their donations in over the next two weeks.

ASX Sharemarket Game
Over the past 10 weeks, more than 100 students from Years 7 to 12 have been participating in the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Schools Sharemarket Game. Players were given a virtual $50,000, buying and selling shares with company prices mirroring real live market prices. The game is a fantastic way to expose students to all the trials and tribulations of the market, fluctuations in share prices, market volatility as well as educating them in how to read financial news, share prices and what to look for in a company when investing.
Congratulations to the following teams who ended the game with the highest valued portfolios:
