YR9 EAL

Melbourne Holocaust Museum Excursion

On Thursday, 17th November, the year 9 EAL class along with their teachers, Mrs Walker and Ms Tsolakidis went to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum for the day.

In EAL, we have been studying the film adaptation to ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak. The film is set during World War II in Germany. As a class, they have learnt about the historical context of the film and the events of World War II.

The purpose for this excursion was for the class to attend an on-site workshop and learn about the Holocaust. During the workshop the students were able to participate in activities that involved handling preserved artifacts (unfortunately, no photos were permitted) and participate in identifying how these artifacts linked with specific words such as propaganda, dehumanisation, the holocaust and many more.

Afterwards, the class had the privilege to meet and speak with a Holocaust survivor – Jack Leder,  who detailed his experiences with his family during World War II moving from Vienna to Belgium. Jack’s story inspired the students, and they were eager to ask him many questions about his experiences during this time.

The class represented the College by displaying the values and were extremely well behaved and respectful. The class were able to use this experience at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum to assist in their understanding of World War II and make connections to ‘The Book Thief’.

After a long day of traveling by public transport and enjoying lunch at McDonalds, the students made their way back to the College and in the process discussed their favourite part of the day and were grateful for the experience.
