Principal's Report

Principal Team in 2023

Congratulations to Evan Miller who has been provisionally appointed to the Acting Principal Role at Highvale Secondary College from January 27 until August 25, 2023. We wish Evan all the very best in leading the Highvale community next year. Over the coming weeks we be appointing an Acting Associate Principal at Brentwood to replace him.

Headstart 2023

All students will make a headstart to 2023 by beginning 2023 classes on November 28 with their new teachers. The focus of the Headstart program is for students to understand the requirements of each subject and for teachers to get to know their students. Headstart also heralds our new 5 period day with the first locker bell at 8:44am to ensure students are ready for the first class starting at 8:49am. The end of the school day remains 3:05pm.

Attendance and Study Periods

A continued emphasis on attendance and punctuality during Headstart and in 2023 will help students maximise their learning outcomes. Students are expected to be present and punctual for all classes. Year 12 students are required to be present for all scheduled classes including any study periods in between scheduled classes. Year 12 students are required to sign in at the SLC for study periods timetabled for period 2, 3 or 4. Year 11 students sign in at the library for any study periods. Parent or guardian permission on Compass is required for students who need to leave early from scheduled classes for unavoidable appointments. Students should sign out at the House Hub where the attendance officer will confirm parent/guardian permission has been noted.

Lockers and Mobile Phones

Lockers should be cleared by the end of Headstart. Students are encouraged to keep their lock for their new locker next year. A lock is required to ensure any valuables can be safely secured. The best way for students to avoid the temptation of being distracted by their mobile phone is to secure it away in their locker during the school day.

SLC

2023 Year 12 students will have access to the Senior Learning Centre during Headstart and are reminded of the behavioural expectations of using the SLC shared with them at the recent year level assembly. The kitchen is also available for use by Year 12 students at recess and lunch time. Water is permitted in the SLC, all other food and drink is to be enjoyed outside the SLC.

Invitation Space X-plore Camp 2023 Information Sessions

Ever wanted to go into space?  Explore micro-gravity?  Want to experience what it would be like to land the Mars Rover on Mars?  Do you have what it takes to work in the Mission Control Centre at NASA?

Brentwood is looking for students in years 8-11 next year with a passion and interest in space to travel with like-minded students from partner schools in the Waverley network to the USA in September 2023 on the Space- X-plore program with Global Learning Expeditions.  Highlights of the trip include time at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

To find out more about this out of this world adventure, students are invited to come along to an information session to be held in the Senior Learning Centre this Friday 18 November at lunchtime.

For parents we have set up a unique trip page through YouLi (You Live to Travel) for our Waverley network school group via the link below. You are invited to register your details to be kept in the loop regarding an upcoming information session for the trip on Tuesday 29th November at 6pm at South Oakleigh Secondary college, in the Lecture Theatre.  It will also be live streamed so families can log in remotely if they can’t attend in person, details for which will be provided through this link.

Visit: https://youli.io/t/gle/usa-stem-space-tour-mars

Please note registration here and attendance at the information session do not commit you to attending the camp or any financial commitment. At this time, we are seeking interest to see if we have enough students to make the trip viable.

Please find attached a flyer for the program with more detail and costs, do not hesitate to contact myself directly if you have any questions.
