1st XI v St Andrew’s Cathedral College @ Oxford Falls – Saturday 12 November 2022

The 1st XI was at home against SACS. The toss was lost, and the SPX cricketers were in the field first on a summery morning. Jesse Mansbridge (2-15) clean bowled the opposition opener and Joel Austin took a diving catch in the covers off Mitchell McGrath’s bowling, before the pace of Andrew May (2-9 off 6 overs) and Flynn Pavely (1-6 off 5 overs) attacked the middle order. After a poor period of extras and loose bowling, the last few wickets fell quickly as Mansas Bansal (3-18) found his rhythm and Pat Frost took a good outfield catch. SACS were dismissed for 75 in the 31st over. Frost (19) and Austin (34 not out) continued their steady starts to the 1st XI innings with a 39-run stand before Will Pavely (22 not out) found the gaps. The 1st XI reaching the target in 11 overs for a nine-wicket victory.

Two more weeks of Basketball this term before a Christmas break in the season. Most teams take on St Augustine’s or Oakhill in what should be a fiercely competitive round of fixtures. Last week saw 4 of our 5 ‘A’ teams get the chocolates

NSTA Tennis

An amazing morning for tennis, the sun was out, a slight breeze and lots of fun was had on the courts. Pius won 7 of the 8 matches at 8.00 am, which was a great achievement! Lucas Ma and Joseph Wilson (SPX 30) played and excellent doubles match winning 6-0 to SPX 32. There was a lot of friendly banter and laughs out on the court which was also great to see. Thank you to Justin Lee who played up in SPX 22 to partner Jack Costa. The boys also played an exciting doubles match just beating Reddam 5, 6 games to 5. As always thank you to James Higgins, Aidan Seifert and Alex Higgins who stepped in to help mentor and umpire the green ball matches.

At 10.00 am SPX 4 played a tough match against Barker 1 and although they didn’t win they seemed to have fun out on the court and great sportsmanship was seen. A special mention must go to Ethan Li and Aidan Seifert who turned up to play just their singles match and what a match it was going for just over an hour and coming down to Aidan just beating Ethan 7-6. The Anderson twins, Cooper and Spencer, SPX 8 are a difficult pair to beat when it comes to doubles. It must be a twin thing! Cooper also won his singles to help clinch the win for their team. Will Fiore and Lachlan Yu both played well against Reddam 4 winning their match 17 games to 11.

Please ensure that you are checking your weekly scores, rankings and draw on the Xpoint site: https://www.xpointsports.com/region/325/currentEvents

Also note that this weekend (November 19) will be the final round before the finals and play offs on November 26. ALL players will be playing on that weekend.

Senior Swimming

Last Friday night the squad competed at the St Patrick’s College Invitational Carnival at Ryde Aquatic Centre. We had a few personal best times and Nicholas Gladen breaking the U17 50m Freestyle record by half a second. The Juniors came 4th, the Intermediates came 5th and the Seniors came a very close 2nd to Kings. Overall, St Pius came 4th which was outstanding.

Training concludes this Friday and will recommence in 2023 mid-February.

Strength and Conditioning

Strength and Conditioning testing is this week! This is your final testing opportunity for the year and is a great way to map your progress for 2023. It will give you direct feedback on how you are tracking with your training, and it also gives us a really good indication of how we are doing as program. This week influences where we steer the program over the next few months. Below is a breakdown of the tests and how they should be conducted. The testing will occur over the week and it’s important to understand that these sessions are not workouts, they are all-out efforts. This is the part where you find out where you really are compared to where you think you are. Do these tests in the order they are displayed in the link below and you should have a decent day out! To record your scores you must add your data into first Thursday of November in your calendar on teambuildr. Take your time with the testing, don’t rush it like a session or a normal workout, sit down a day before and plan it out, think about how you want to attack it… give yourself the best chance to perform at your best!
