Cultural Club

With Over 7100 Islands, the archipelago of the Philippines certainly has a wide variety of cultures, dialects and festivals.  In our second session we had the chance to view a range of traditional clothes posing in front of our “bahay kubo” with was constructed by the Biticon family.

The children also go to make an adapted version of a sipa to develop their skills after watching an instructional video. I hope they are still practicing these skills at home.

Last week we had a look at the colourful festivals. There was no shortage of colour and pageantry in the images we saw. With the help of Mr Huddleston, Miss Webster and Mrs Kinninment, we all had some merienda. This is a meal, we Filipinos have between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner. Our merienda consisted of ensaimadas, ube(tarro) ice cream and mango juice. Everyone enjoyed the new flavours of this merienda.

Finally, we had a go at dancing Tinikling which is the national dance of the Philippines. Rather than using bamboo poles, we used poly pipe which allowed us to have a go and enjoy testing our rhythm and agility without getting our ankles caught between the poles.

A big thank you to the Misamen family for sending in clothes for us to try, Tely Biticon for attending two of our sessions and to Miss Lim who is always available to help with activities and take beautiful photos at each event.
