Alumni Update 

Hello from Alumni - My name is Alison Meredith and I came onboard at Northern Bay College early this year in the role of Alumni Program Coordinator.

The aim of the Alumni program, through 'Our School', is to inspire the current cohort of students with career pathways and options that they may not have considered or may previously had limited visibility of. It’s been really exciting to start at Northern Bay.

Getting Started

Starting up the program has involved establishing a database of Alumni. I have reached out to Alumni through LinkedIn, Facebook, teacher connections, old records and school captains, and through other Alumni networks.

When someone is added to our database, I speak to them, listen to their experiences, with the aim to play ‘matchmaker’ with a good opportunity within the school.

The people I speak to have very broad and diverse career and study paths. 

Some of their stories are very inspirational and some Alumni have worked incredibly hard to get where they are today.

The broader community has been very supportive which has been great and made getting the message out easier with their support.

Alumni Activities Semester 1

In Term 2, we bought in four Alumni as part of Year 9 Careers Week.

Our panel included two university grads, and two in work-related pathways. These Alumni spanned the industries of Health, Commerce, the Food Industry and Real Estate.

The sessions were fantastic. The students were well engaged, asking questions during the session.

The panel members themselves, were friendly, relatable, and honest about their experiences. 

Two panel members relayed that they had difficult times at school, in terms of behaviour, or their friendship group. Their candour about changing their outlook was very insightful, and hopefully impactful for students in a similar position.

Upcoming events

In Term 3 we are planning:

• An Alumni speaker for NAIDOC week
• Alumni guests at the STEAM expo
• Alumni led workshops in the IMPACT program.

But we are also open to any and all opportunities with teachers and leadership staff, now that we have a few Alumni interested in coming back.

Then + Now Profiles

As part of trying to promote and make visible differing Alumni careers, we have been highlighting Alumni through social media and school channels.

It’s been very rewarding to hear student feedback about particular Alum they have noticed or read about.
