In Year 9 Geography, students are challenged to explore the ideas of civics and citizenship by being active role models in their communities. Through a series of class discussions and activities, students choose a societal problem they are passionate about solving (such as homelessness, mental health, bullying, etc.) and use their talents to create a 60-second video to raise awareness of their issue. Teamwork is key! Project teams must collaborate effectively to plan, create, execute, and edit their films. When the hard work is done, students get to share their films with their peers and reflect on their achievements. This year, some truly wonderful and innovative videos challenged us all to do more to bring about positive social change!

In Term 4, Year 8 History students study the period of Shogun rule in Japan. To celebrate the end of the semester, Ms Weyenberg’s class did their best to recreate a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a skill that was so important even the toughest of samurai warriors were expected to master it! We practiced our mindfulness by focusing on every detail and concentrating on each careful movement to make sure the tea was just right. The overwhelming feedback was that traditional green tea is far too bitter for the Year 8 palate!

Fieldwork is an essential component of Geography class and a number of trips have been run this semester.
Year 9 students journeyed to Belgrave to explore the impacts and sustainability of tourism in the region. These students were able observe the impact of reduced tourism to the region and the ways in which businesses have coped.
Year 8 students ventured to Brighton and Sandringham to investigate the impacts of coastal erosion on beachside areas. Here students tested water quality from Port Phillip Bay and compared it to storm water drains as well as evaluating the effectiveness of coastal management techniques in the area.
Year 7 students were able to analyse our schools facilities including the provision of shade, seating, green space and accessibility. As part of their Fieldwork, students have created proposals to improve the liveability of BHHS.
Thank you to our humanities staff members for coordinating and organising these trips.
