Student Learning
Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese Calligraphy is a traditional art of turning Chinese characters into images through pressure and speed variations of the pointed Chinese brush. At Magill School, Year 4 students have been learning how to hold and use the Chinese brush to practise writing Chinese characters.
In week 7, we organised a Chinese Calligraphy workshop for our Year 4s and Year 2s to experience Chinese Calligraphy. Students learned to draw bamboo and pandas through the use of ink, brush and traditional rice paper.
The Game Development Coding Project
This year, students in Year 3 had the opportunity to learn to code and create their own computer games. The idea of this coding project was to bring a narrative to life through turning it into a computer game.
Students participated in coding lessons in class, had opportunities to attend lunch time coding sessions and were given access to tutorials through Google Classroom teaching them step-by-step how to code their own games.
Students completed writing activities in which they wrote detailed descriptions of characters and described the world of their game in vivid detail. Students also had opportunities to design and print the characters from their games using 3D design software and 3D printers. Some students even developed merchandise such as hand sewn soft toys or fabric tote bags advertising their computer games.
At the end of the project, all Year 3 students had the chance to play all the best games developed across the year level. The students then voted on which games they liked the best. Our winning game coders were Janice from M1 (equal 2nd place), Giselle in M5 (equal 2nd place) and John in M5 (1st place). Well done to all the students who participated in the Year 3 Game Development Project for 2021.
