Junior School News

From the Head of Junior School

As I was walking towards the front entrance of the Early Childhood Centre for the first time, I was met by a friendly looking pirate on the left. This bright and fun piece of artwork caught my eye immediately. I felt compelled to say, “Good morning” and offered a polite nod of my head in his direction. We’ll be greeting each other daily, so I thought it was important for me to make a good first impression! I imagined he said in return, “Welcome to GSG. You’ll find great treasures here.” The pretend conversation continued to play in my mind: “Thank you, Sir. Of that I have no doubt. Let’s begin.”

Positive early interactions and connections are so valuable for all of us, but particularly for students. Just like my pirate friend and I (I must learn his name), I sincerely wish all students, families and colleagues a wonderful start to 2021 surrounded with warmth of care, connection and inspired purpose.

On a personal note, I convey my deepest thanks to Ms Suzanne Youens for her service to the Junior School and broader Great Southern Grammar community. Ms Youens was extremely generous with her time for me late last year to ensure I was well prepared to begin this year. My family and I are grateful for her welcome and support. We wish Ms Youens a smooth transition and great fulfilment in her new role as Head of Primary at Frederick Irwin Anglican School.

So, let’s begin…

Teachers, Educational Assistants and Support Staff have been busily preparing learning spaces and programmes in preparation for our students' arrival, which begins with a class Meet and Greet on Friday 29 January from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. This informal gathering allows students and teachers to share stories of their holidays, welcome new students, familiarise themselves with the classroom and prepare for Day One on Monday 1 February.

Students begin their learning programmes on Monday 1 February, including specialist subject lessons. Class timetables can viewed on SEQTA Engage, which is also accessible via the GSG app.

In the first two weeks, Year Six students will adventure to Rottnest Island from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February for their cohort camp. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the group to form strong connections early in the year and prepare themselves to lead Junior School in 2021.

I look forward to hosting the Parent Information Evening for all Junior School families on Friday 12 February, beginning at 5.00pm, followed by the Parent Sundowner afterwards at 6.00pm. These initial connection points with teachers and fellow parents form the foundation of supportive partnerships for the year ahead.

Finally, schools are amazing places at any time of year, but they particularly come alive when students step on-campus. You will see from these photographs that our teachers are eagerly awaiting the students' arrival, testing out all our learning spaces to make sure they are fun and ready for you to enjoy! We look forward to seeing you soon.

With best wishes, and high aspirations for the treasures that await.

Mr Ken Raven | Head of Junior School
