Pedal Cinema 2021

The students have spoken!

After tallying the online votes, we are excited to announce that the 2021 Human-Powered, Zero Carbon cinema night will feature the academy award winning animated film Zootopia.

Making the most of our picturesque location on the banks of the Birrarung, MGC will be hosting our tenth annual zero carbon community open air cinema on Friday 26th of February. Gates open at 5pm and guests are invited to bring along a picnic rug, find a nice spot on the school oval and enjoy the summer vibes while you are entertained by student musicians and peruse the Sustainability showcase waiting for the sun to set and the film begins.

The film is powered 100% by pedal and rowing power, typically ¾ of which is powered by our powerful year 8s who pedal and row in 5 minute shifts throughout the school day to store up the human power in batteries.

Guests are welcome to contribute their own human power on the bicycle or rowing generators or to try their luck on the pedal-powered DUNKATRON, carousel or smoothie machines! (Bring a change of clothes if you’re brave enough to stand under DUNKATRON)

Carnival games, Raffle tickets, Guess the watt competition, face-painting, costume competition and sustainability-themed information stalls will keep you entertained from 5pm until 8.30pm.

The snack bar has you covered for movie refreshments featuring pedal powered smoothies, carbon-neutral coffee, soft serve ice cream, popcorn, plastic-free lollies and for something more substantial, try a scrumptious serving of paella courtesy of the Paella Pan!

Prizes will be awarded for the most powerful pedaller, best dressed Zootopia character and the “cleverest original Zootopia meme”.

Tickets will go on sale via the MGC website from February 17th or are available at the gate. This is a registered COVIDSafe event and guests are reminded to practice physical distancing, good hygiene and to stay home if they have any symptoms.

For more information, Contact Sustainability Coordinator Mr Andrew Vance. This event is designed and run by the MGC Sustainability Collective. A community group open to staff, students, parents and community focused on achieving the best environmental outcomes for the school. New members always welcome.

Human Powered Pedal Cinema 2021

MGC’s very own carbon neutral outdoor cinema experience is returning for 2021!

MGC’s Human Powered Pedal Cinema is on the lookout for fabulous prize donations from businesses, families and friends to contribute to the raffle and to award our best ‘pedallers’. If your family knows of a business that might like to donate, please take a flyer from the Science Staffroom and have a chat with them. Lots of local businesses are keen to donate prizes to school fetes and the like. Contact Ms Hosking (samone_hosking@mgc.vic.edu.au) if you have any questions, information or prizes to drop off.

We also invite families to bring in chocolate and lolly donations for everyone’s favourite side show….. the CHOC TOSS! Grab some choccies and deliver them to Ms Hosking in the Science Staffroom. If you can’t come on the night this is a great way to help support this fantastic event.  We encourage everyone to assess the packaging of the chocolate and lollies (and all your other packaging for that matter!). Is the packaging plastic free? There are lots of scoop and weigh choc and lolly stations in supermarkets and delis now.

We are looking forward to a fantastic night of sustainable education, activities and the classic movie ‘ZOOTOPIA’. And there are plenty of family friendly sideshow attractions running from 5pm until the movie begins at dusk.
