Acting Principal’s Report

Jackie Knight

Welcome Back!

My name is Jackie Knight and I am the Acting Principal at Melbourne Girls’ College for 2021. I feel very privileged to be appointed to this position and look forward to working with the MGC community on the improvement journey of this highly successful and accomplished school.

Our dedicated staff returned on 27th January to plan and prepare for an exciting year ahead with the return of most of the programs, initiatives and activities that underpin the College vision of – “A school with an outward looking, global perspective on girls’ leadership, academic, social, sporting, ethical, creative and civic success so that all Melbourne Girls’ students will lead and succeed throughout their lives”

The day was an opportunity for focusing on the important priorities for 2021 after a challenging year of remote learning and COVID set backs. This year will have a strong focus on supporting students who need to catch up after remote learning with the introduction of the Tutoring Initiative while also supporting students who have thrived to continue to extend their learning.

There will also be a continued priority to build on the strong connections that were made with families during 2020 and to make sure we look after our student's mental and physical health so every student can get back outdoors, get active and be creative. The college will continue to focus on learning through our dedicated approach to wellbeing. We are optimistic the year ahead will provide every opportunity for students to engage with school life and demonstrate the school values of diversity, excellence and teamwork.

The 27th January was an opportunity to welcome and get to know our new colleagues and build this understanding of our learning community with them.

A huge effort by all students regardless of their ATAR. Well done to Eva Chen and Luiza Souza Alberti who are the Joint Dux of Melbourne Girls’ College for 2020 with an ATAR of 99.65. Luiza’s media animation was also selected for Top Screen out of more than 6,000 students which is an amazing achievement. There was a total of six perfect 50 study scores in Biology, Drama, History Revolutions, Product Design and Technology, Studio Arts and Visual Communication Design.

Other highlights of the 2020 VCE results:

  • 100% satisfactory VCE completions
  • Median Study Score of 33
  • 16.8% Study Scores of 40 or above, the third highest in MGC’s history
  • 31% of MGC Year 12 students achieved an ATAR of 90.00 or above.
  • 55% of MGC Year 12 students achieved an ATAR of 80.00 or above.

WELCOME Year 7!

The 28th January saw the first official day for our Year 7 students at the College. It was great to hear the buzz of excitement in their first assembly and see them looking smart in their College uniforms. We look forward to hearing about their adventures on the Year 7 camp this week.

Swimming Carnival:

Wednesday 3rd February was a great day at the Swimming Carnival. It was pleasing to see so many students participating and dressed up in their house colours. The weather certainly delivered, and it was a fantastic venue down at MSAC. A huge thank you to Mr Monaghan for all his hard work in making it such as successful day.
