In The Classrooms

This week I have enjoyed spending some time in the Prep and Junior classrooms. It has been fabulous to see how well our students have settled back into classroom routines.

In the Junior School the students were reading ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. During shared reading the students were practising using their expression in certain parts of the text. They then had the chance to independently practise reading with expression through a performance of ‘The Gruffalo’ using Reader’s Theatre.

Reader’s Theatre allows students to create a play using short scripts. It builds the student’s fluency, expression and confidence when reading aloud. The students practised their part of the script in small groups, then put on a performance to the whole class.

In Maths this week, our Prep students have been learning all about location. They practised using positional language including in front, behind and beside. The highlight of the week was when they used the Bee-Bots for the first time. The students programmed the robotic bees to go forwards, backwards, left and right. Using the Bee-Bots not only allowed students to learn about location and position but also encouraged to use estimation and counting skills as well.
