An Overview of our Learning
Wow well what an amazing start our students have made to their second journey of Remote Learning. They all did such a fantastic job in learning and navigating a range of platforms last remote learning, that our second start has been that much easier. Miss Henchley, Mrs Woollard and I are blown away every day with the enthusiasm of our students in Webex sessions, their dedication to complete Learning tasks to a high standard and their creativity and resilience shining through.
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through Term Three! Our students have been very busy with their learning and have loved the opportunity to share moments and work that they are proud of through the online platform ‘Padlet’. It is wonderful for the students to have ownership of this platform and they love being able to see each other’s photos.
What has been happening this term??
ENGLISH
The writing focus for this term is persuasive writing. Students have been learning how to structure a persuasive writing piece and to use supportive statements to make their point of view even stronger. Do you think students should be required to wear school uniform? We had some very strong opinions on that topic!
During reading activities, students have been:
- Identifying the features of non-fiction texts
- Finding the main idea in both fiction and non-fiction texts
- Learning the important skill of note taking
Students have been working on the important skills of speaking and listening during our group Webex sessions. We highly encourage students to attend when they are timetabled. It is a great chance to work through learning tasks and for students to see their classmates and have a chat. This week our students have been presenting their Book Review Learning Task. Hopefully students have found some new books that they may like to read through the recommendation of their peers.
MATHS
The learning tasks for Maths vary between bookwork, Google Slides, YouTube clips and online platforms. This term we have been learning about:
- Angles
- Length
- Area
- Time
- Decimals
Real life activities are set to keep the connection between the curriculum and real life. Students have completed activities such as: draw a robot and calculate its area, find angles around their home, measure the length of everyday objects and order these lengths from shortest to longest. This week the students are learning about tenths and hundredths. To end the week, they will be designing their own lunch order and practise adding up these values. I wonder if anyone will have a go at cooking their own lunch order?
INQUIRY
This term the students have been learning about the Earth, Moon and Sun. They have explored the concepts of:
- Day and night
- Rotation and Orbiting
- The Seasons
Students have used Venn diagrams to compare information, created a model to look at how day and night occurs and have explored the reasons for our seasons.
Which is your favourite season?
WELLBEING
The wellbeing of our students is paramount. To support their wellbeing during Remote leaning, we incorporate a range of activities for students to take time out and reflect on how they are feeling.
Some activities have included:
- Reflecting on having a growth mindset
- NEVR homelessness activity (organised by Junior School Council)
- Mindfulness activities
- Colour monsters that reflect the students emotions throughout the week
Once again we would like to thank our families for their continual support throughout this unprecedented time. It certainly is a juggling act trying to keep all of the plates spinning but we really do appreciate all the help that you give your child/ren in assisting them at home to complete their tasks and in keeping them happy and healthy.
