An Overview of our Learning

Over the past few weeks, the Foundation students have settled in and adapted well to Remote Learning 2.0, and are well and truly back into the swing of it. Over the past couple of weeks the students have been completing a variety of learning tasks and have produced some AMAZING work!

In Mathematics, students have been working hard at developing their number-sense by exploring patterns. They created and continued patterns using a variety of objects from around their homes and were asked to describe and identify which part of the pattern is being repeated. They have also learnt all about the concept of time, examining why we need to tell the time, why time is important and looking at the features of an analogue clock. They even made their own clocks at home with moving hands to help them learn to tell the time to the hour.

In InitiaLit, students have been very busy learning a variety of digraphs and completing reading and writing activities based around these. They have been developing their phonemic awareness skills to sound out and blend letter sounds to read and write words and have been reading lots of decodable texts.

Students have been exploring the purpose of non-fiction texts, the variety of different text features they can contain and how they differ from fiction. The Foundation students have done an outstanding job completing a variety of writing activities, including writing their teachers questions they would like to know and writing about their weekends. They have been working hard at their handwriting skills and are practising the correct letter formation and starting points for each letter.

During Inquiry, students have been exploring the animal world. They have been investigating what living things (even themselves) need to survive such as habitats, energy, water, air and shelter. We have been exploring the Melbourne Zoo website and National Geographic websites.

In Wellbeing over the last few weeks, we have been investigating our feelings and emotions and the way we react when we feel certain ways. We have also looked at how we have BIG emotions sometimes and how we can do some simple repeated actions to help calm ourselves.

Last week we focused on the things that make us happy - it was lovely to see so much gratitude for the things that they have in their lives to make them happy.

Of course we also had the NEVR Homelessness Learning Task (organised by Junior School Council) which was a fantastic success - thank-you to everyone who participated.

We would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of our families for their continued support, hard work and dedication during this challenging time. We think you have all gone above and beyond to help support your children, and we really appreciate all that you do.
