An Overview of our Learning

What an experience our young students are getting through Remote Learning and using the Google Classroom platform. We have successfully been able to combine the Victorian Curriculum with the Learning Tasks set each day and students are developing positive organisational skills linked to being responsible for their own learning.

We are continual investigating new topics and through using explicit teaching videos the students have a clear understanding of expectations.

We have developed a whole year level Padlet, allowing every student the opportunity to share pieces of work they are proud of.

INQUIRY AND SURVIVAL PROJECT

Natural Disasters have been surrounding our students this term in both their Inquiry topic and being stranded on a deserted island. So far we have researched bushfires, tsunamis, volcanoes and earthquakes. With interactive activities such as building their own volcano using vinegar and bicarb, student can experience what an erupting volcano may look like. Visit the Natural History Museum to follow the steps to make your own erupting volcano. (https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-make-a-volcano.html)

Surviving on a deserted island is hard work! So far our students have had to write a diary entry, map their island (including mapping skills and features), find fresh water, build a shelter, identify reasons why fish may be dying and complete extra missions set by their teacher. This week a natural disaster has hit and they need to simulate their disaster and write about the devastation it has caused. Coming up is making your own tools, making fire and first aid issues.

ENGLISH AND MATHS

During Term Three our students have been busy developing many pieces of writing focus on the different text types they have learnt throughout their primary school years. They have been following the writing process of Plan, Draft, Edit and Publish and within a week they have produced some great pieces of writing (see example below). These will be used when we return to school for the Gift Books and Reflections Projects.

In Maths we have just completed a unit on Chance and Data, where the students collected data and graphed them according to the results. We had a whole class Webex tournament where two students versed each other in a game of Paper, Scissors, Rock, Lizard and Spock. This was great fun and the students loved interacting with each other. Many smiles and strange faces occurred during this Maths session.

WELLBEING

During this week our Year 5/6 teachers have brought Wellbeing into each of the curriculum areas and focused on the positive qualities and experiences our students have had. We are continuing to encourage our students to participate in all Webex meeting and to continually build strength in being responsible for their own learning. We have included a daily / weekly Learning Task checklist for students to revisit as well as our SWPBL Class Behaviour Matrix, making a few adjustments to link to Remote Learning.

We are constantly surprised and proud of the work our students are handing in during these unprecedented times. Well done and Thank you to everyone!
