Term 3, Week 2

Home Learning

Home Learning

Welcome to Home Learning 2.0.

First of all, we want to acknowledge that this situation is not ideal for anyone. Given the success of Grade 6 Home Learning last term, we are confident that Term 3 Home Learning will be even stronger. Although there will be lots of similarities between last term and this, we have made some adjustments to improve the experience. Please read through all the information included in this weekly Newsletter as well as the Compass Newsfeed, as it contains more specific information about Home Learning. We will also share this information through posts on the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom.

We thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to contact us via compass with any questions or queries.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. This term we will be running more small group Google Meet sessions. It is an expectation that your child attends their sessions each week.

English

Reading

This week Grade 6 will be studying genre during reading. Using the word "genre" gives students a way to organise and talk about their observations. Once students know that there are different genres, they will find out how to navigate through each kind of text to find the information they seek.

Learning about the features of different genres will help the pupils recognise what they are reading and quickly adjust their reading styles.

As students become more skilled, they can use the features of different genres to help them learn information quickly and efficiently—for example, using headings to get through informational text.

Students will also be participating in online guided reading sessions on Google Meets, led by their classroom teacher.

Writing

We will do a short one-week activity for writing, before starting our new unit in week 3. This week will involve a creative writing task and students will write a 'Guide to Surviving Home Learning'. They will have creative freedom by deciding the text type to present their work and the information they share. Students will generate their own success criteria based on writing skills they believe they need to focus on.

Mathematics

This term, we will be focusing on Fractions. This unit will take approximately 5 weeks. Next week, the students will begin by completing a Fractions Pretest, and then revising the following Fraction concepts - fractions vocabulary, finding fractions on a number line and adding and subtracting fractions. In the slides provided to the students, there are multiple extension activities students are encouraged to complete, once they have finished the set activities.

Unit of Inquiry

Students will begin a new Unit of inquiry for term 3. For the next 5 weeks they will be focusing on the central idea ‘How the World Works’ and inquiring into, how natural processes impact the earth's surface, how humans respond to earth's changes, and ways scientific understanding can help solve problems. Students will research 5 different Scientific Phenomenon and describe what makes them unique. Students will illustrate and label what they believe a scientist is and looks like. Students will watch 3 Science Bob videos, recording important information about the experiments.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students and sharing this with students. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
