Senior School News

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to all students and staff, I hope you had a relaxing holiday break and had a chance to ‘recharge the batteries’ ready for what will be a very important term. I have been very impressed with our Senior School students as they have settled back into classes and exams during these unprecedented times.

MONASH SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Congratulations to Year 10 students James Wylie, Lis Maria Jobi and Luisa Harrasser who have been invited to join the Monash Scholars Program.  The nominations were based on these students’ academic ability, leadership qualities and contribution to school and community life.  The benefits of the Monash Scholars Program include: enhanced learning, exploring career ambitions, defining personal aspirations, preparation for university life and building networks with other high-achieving students.

YEAR 11 VCAL LUNCH

Thank you to our Year 11 VCAL students for the celebratory lunch which was held on Thursday 16 July.  As Mr John Albiston Albiston, Mrs Cathy Hogg and myself said at the lunch – we are very proud of this group of students and their achievements throughout the year so far.  It was a pleasure to attend the lunch and listen to the students’ presentations on their highlights and value of the VCAL program.  Examples included:

“I enjoy VCAL because the work and topics we study are related to when we leave school and the skills we will need in the workplace and in our adult years." - Shayla Howden

“I like how many opportunities that are available for me to further explore what I am passionate about in VCAL." - Alex Green

“All of my teachers have given me so much inspiration and encouragement to follow my dreams.  I have been so grateful to get encouragement from all my teachers." - Cory MacGregor

“The thing I like about VCAL is that it is more of a hands-on program, I like the practical work at school and the work at TAFE." - Jake Simpson

“I love my classmates and love the work we do in this class and my teachers are great." - Jaidyn Stirling

“I feel like VCAL gives you a set of tools that you can use in the real world from problem-solving and organising events to dealing with difficult situations." - Corey Swainston

“VCAL gives me the skills I need in the workplace, such as knowledge about safety and how to interact with other employees and employers in the workplace.' - Bradley Quill

“I have really enjoyed this year so far with VCAL.  It has been extremely helpful." - James White

“The topics you cover and learn are interesting and will help you in your future life as most of the topics are based around lifestyle. I have learnt many different things so far in VCAL that will help me in the future." - Jaxon Fraser

“I like the fact the VCAL is more suited to the direction of the career that I want to pursue." – Tom Dalgleish

Thank you also to Mrs Sharon Bourne, our VCAL Coordinator for overseeing the program.

YEAR 12 EXAMS

Thank you to Year 12 teachers who provided our students with the opportunity to complete mid year exams for Unit 3 studies over the second week of Term 3.  I recognise and appreciate the extra work involved by teachers in the setting and marking of these exams, which provides valuable feedback to students on their progress and learning to date.  These exam results will be distributed to students in August.

I would like to thank Mrs Bev Valentine (our Chief Supervisor) for overseeing the supervision of the exams.  All supervisors were very impressed with our students’ work ethic and behaviour over the exam period.

YEAR 11 EXAMS

Thank you to Mrs Ellen D’Ambra and Mr Paul Don for organising the end of semester Year 11 exams.  Examination certificates will be distributed to students in early August.

SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

End of semester reports were available to parents to view via Compass at the end of last term.  It is important for parents to read through and discuss the report with their child and devise and implement strategies together to further improve student learning outcomes.

SENIOR SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION 2021

Many thanks to our Careers Practitioner, Mrs Sharon Bourne who has overseen the Senior School course counselling process.  Mrs Bourne has conducted assemblies with the Year 10 students and information sessions with the Year 11 students during iSupport.

The 2021, Year 12 subject selection took place on Wednesday 22 July and Thursday 23 July.  The 2021, Year 11 course selection will take place on Tuesday 4 August, Thursday 6 August and Wednesday 12 August.  All Year 11 students must make a course counselling appointment via Compass.  Course counselling will be conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams.

VTAC SELECTIONS 2021

This term Year 12 students begin the important process of preparing their Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC) selections for next year.  Information, guidance and assistance will be available in iSupport sessions over the next few weeks and from Mrs Bourne.

YEAR 12 END OF YEAR EXAMS – SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS

Frankston High School is conducting Year 12 end of year exams during the September holidays.  The exams will commence on Friday 25 September and will conclude on Friday 2 October.

The advantages of this practice are clear, including: ensuring students utilise their September holidays for revision; opportunities for our students to maximise their success/results; maximising class revision time in Term 4 where teachers can address areas of concern in student performance and exam technique and it provides opportunities for students to hone exam techniques and practices.

It is our expectation that Year 12 students would devote the third term holiday period to revision and study in preparation for these examinations and the final VCAA examinations.  These examinations will be conducted under VCAA and Frankston High School guidelines.  Final examination timetables will be distributed in the next few weeks.  These exams are compulsory and full school uniform is required.

STUDENTS DRIVING TO SCHOOL

Students who drive to school are reminded that they must complete a consent form (which is available from the Senior School Office) and attach a photocopy of their driver’s licence.

Students are not permitted to park in the school grounds and hence, must ensure that they follow local parking restrictions on nearby roads.  Students should also be aware that they must not park too close to the pedestrian crossings or driveways, particularly the entrance and exit to the Senior Campus.
