‘Hidden Heroes’ Community Book Project

This year Pulse and Grades 5&6 had planned on running Mother’s Day stalls for bushfire-affected schools in Gippsland… but the initial effects of COVID-19 scuttled those plans. One of the parents involved in these plans was talking to Mr Dickson and wondering what we could do – as a school community – to keep that outward focus in times when situations are closing us in… and the Community Book Project was born.

Our resident wordsmith Emma Hughes and Mr Dickson wrote a little rhyming story about Hidden Heroes in our communities – the doctors, nurses, cleaners, truck drivers, police… even teachers who are working hard to keep our community safe and running as smoothly as possible.

These student picture books are messages of thanks and a gesture of appreciation for the extra work and effort our ‘hidden heroes’ have been contributing during this pandemic. The finished product will be presented to as many local ‘heroes’ as we can find: police, CFA volunteers, doctors, nurses, paramedics, hospital staff, medical practitioners, pharmacy staff, government leaders…

What a great way to express gratitude, acknowledge others, and give back to our community!

So what can my family do?

All of our Junior School students are encouraged to illustrate one, two or even all fourteen stanzas of the attached story, then follow the steps below to submit them to our BHCS Pulse team who are coordinating the production. Depending upon the number of submissions, we are planning on producing versions of the book with illustrations from each Junior School year level.

1.  Draw a picture to go with any of the 14 stanzas of the text

2. Include the illustrator’s age and first name only as part of the design (bottom right corner)

3.    Scan your design and save as .jpeg or .png

4. Email your designs with student name, year level and stanza number to pulse@bhcs.vic.edu.au

Submissions close Friday 4th September.

For continuity purposes, if your child is drawing the central character (male or female), can they have short dark hair, a red tee-shirt and blue jeans… but the rest of the drawing is totally up to you – in whatever media – with whatever you think best illustrates the words!

We can’t wait to see your artworks!
