Senior School News

Term 3 is traditionally when we in Senior School begin to look towards next year. It is a funny feeling when there is still so much work to be done this year. The Year 12 students will begin to go through the process of applying through VTAC for their post VCE pathways.

We would normally be encouraging Year 11 & 12 students to get out and go to some Open Days during the next few weeks. The Open Days are still going on albeit remotely. We feel it is really valuable for students to attend some of these.

Course Counselling has a very different feel this year as well. We are meeting with all current Year 11 students to discuss their post VCE plans and their requested subjects for Year 12 in 2021. We have already met with most of the Year 11 students to do this.

For the current Year 9 & 10 students course counselling is being done remotely this year. The subject selection form has been converted to an ‘Event’ in XUNO. We are very conscious of the need for parent involvement in the subject selection process. By listing this as an event on XUNO we are able to set it up so parents are required to approve their child’s subject choices. We ask all parents to discuss this with their child prior to approving the subjects. Each student will also have a course counselling meeting to discuss their subjects and ensure they have chosen wisely for their intended career path. We are well into this process as well with most of the Year 9 students and almost half of the Year 10s completed. As you can imagine, this process is quite difficult to manage remotely so I ask for your patience while we ensure each student gets the support they require.

The next part of the process requires us looking at numbers and working out how many classes of each subject are required. We will be speaking with students who have chosen classes that will not run and confirming their alternate subjects, as well as confirming enhancement subjects for those entering year 10. Once this process is complete we will block the subjects and follow up with students with class clashes. We hope to get most of this process done this term.

Year 12 Practice Exams

Although we did not run midyear practice exams this year we believe exam practice is a vital part of the year for Year 12 students. We are planning for practice exams in the first week of the September school holidays. We require all Year 12 students, and Year 11s with a Year 12 subject to be available for these exams. These exams will be a really important step in preparing for end of year exams.

Year 12 News

As also mentioned also in the Careers Corner, Year 12 students will be registering and entering their VTAC course preferences.  The senior school staff will be holding lunchtime information sessions in the week starting Monday 3rd August.  Students will get vital information about how to register, apply for courses, SEAS and scholarships.

This time of the year is extremely busy for everyone, especially during these very challenging times and I encourage all students who wish to apply for SEAS under the medical and difficult circumstances category to email or consult the person that is going to provide the support documentation ASAP.

On a lighter note, some of the Year 12 Executive members have begun work on the Year 12 Yearbook. Our intention is to have the book published by the end of the school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or concerns about your student.

Year 10 News

Welcome back Year 10 to remote learning 2.0. Even though we are still in the early stages of the second round of remote learning we can already see that students are coping much better than last time. Students are completing morning wellbeing check ins, class check ins and also completing set tasks on time.

This time around, teachers are marking their rolls differently. Teachers will mark the role for each class on XUNO, which then goes towards their attendance overall. This is something students must think about as students in VCE are expected to uphold 95% attendance.

Currently the Year 10 students are starting to complete their course counselling sessions for 2021, thinking about their future and entering VCE at Glen Eira College. It is very important that all students are reading every post that is put on the Year 10 google classroom and emails, which are the two main areas we give out information.

In Senior School, we really do understand that remote learning is much harder than being present within school. You aren’t around your friends, teachers and overall freedom of being at school. If at any time you feel like you are not coping with workload, being at home or just feel like you want to chat with someone, please do not hesitate to call the school and speak with Mrs Mortimer or send an email.

Your mental health and overall wellbeing is our highest priority.
