Year Adviser News

Year 7 Year Adviser

Gemma Hanlon

Year 7 have had a tough start to their high school journey. However, they have managed to handle remote learning with maturity and have settled back into face-to-face teaching with ease. I have received a number of teachers approach me saying how well behaved they are particularly when having to line up for Friday sport.

Year 7 were lucky enough to attend a talk on how to maintain their safety online with Senior Constable Ali Watts. Not only were they extremely well behaved, but they all enjoyed themselves. We are looking forward to term 3 and being able to get back into a normal routine post COVID-19. They are officially half way through year 7 and they are to be congratulated on how well they have settled into high school life.

Term 2 has been an interesting and challenging time for both Year 8 students and teachers. We were faced with a once in a life time pandemic that resulted in a dramatic change of routine and a change from face to face learning to remote learning. Ms Espejel and I were delighted in Week 5 to see students return with big smiles on their faces as they reconnected with their friends and teachers. I enjoyed hearing a variety of stories of student experiences during remote learning and was extremely pleased to hear how much students were looking forward to coming back to Evans High School.

This term has been busy and Term 3 is looking to be exciting with the return of some normality. I look forward to seeing parents at parent teacher interviews next term and a big thank you for your support during these past few weeks.

Year 9 Year Adviser

Rhys Murphy

It has been an extremely busy return to face to face learning for the Year 9 cohort this semester. Students have eagerly thrown themselves into their studies and I am hearing extremely positive feedback from their teachers, particularly in their elective subjects which is very pleasing to hear.

I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my congratulations to those students that participated in online and distance learning during the lock down period, the majority of feedback from teachers is saying that Year 9 students approached this difficult time with enthusiasm and maturity beyond their years.

We are currently in 'Spirit Month' at Evans High, so I would encourage parents and guardians to communicate to their children the importance of being proactive in their involvement in the initiatives that the school is having (such as Harmony Day), the idea being that at the end of the term students are a little more engaged with their peers, their school and the community.

Have a fantastic and safe break Year 9 and I look forward to seeing you all again come Term 3.

Year 10 Year Adviser

Melissa Silva

Term 2 has been a challenging time for all students. However, Year 10 has managed to settle back into our normal school routine with ease. Unfortunately, there are currently a few issues such as students not wearing correct school uniform, not participating in practical lessons and incorrect use of mobile phones in class. We will be focusing on improving these issues in Term 3. Parents and carers please ensure that your child is coming to school every day in full school uniform (including black leather shoes), that students are bringing their PE uniform whenever they have practical lessons and on Fridays for sport. It is important that students have all the necessary equipment for each class in order to maximise their learning outcomes.

On a positive note, students participated in anti-racism presentations and were involved with Harmony Day in Week 10. Year 10 leaders have also come together in planning for next semester. They have come up with some great ideas for Term 3 and 4 and we can’t wait to share those with you. Overall, Mr Tamayo and I are proud of our year group and looking forward to sharing our students’ future successes.

Year 11 Year Adviser

Steve Satmaka

2020 has been “that kind of year”, but Year 11 have continued to meet up to any challenges that have been thrown their way. After navigating their way through the tough process of remote learning, Year 11 returned to face-to-face teaching appreciative of the connections that they have made with their teachers.

Kudos to the Year 11's on the leadership team as they took initiative and presented some powerful sessions fighting against racism. The presentation I saw made me proud to be your year advisor and it is nice to see how much you have grown. Enjoy the holidays as you all deserve it for showing leadership and resilience this past semester.

Year 12 Year Adviser

Courtney Griffiths

Year 12 have been working hard this semester completing assessment tasks and creating their study material in preparation for their Trial Examinations, which will take place next Term in week 4. Students are reminded to make notes and practice examination style questions. Group study sessions are promoted as a more engaging mode of study in either one of the designated senior study areas at Evans.

Year 12 students have also been engaged with and lead various wellbeing programs across the school such as lunch time activities, racism awareness lessons, Harmony Day and the MADDFEST performance.
