Student Leaders

Community Service Week
The Community Service committee made their debut week (23-27 May) filled with amazing events. We did not anticipate for it to be as successful as it was!
With winter creeping slowly among us, we sold hot chips at the quadrangle on Monday. We cannot forget the help from Lucy from the Food Tech Department (she was not a fan of the chicken salt haha). With a limited supply, students were rushing up like their life depended on it. It was so popular that it sold out within 10 minutes!
On Tuesday, we decided to have our own Gratitude Day for students to show appreciation for the people around them. We decided to sell roses for $2.50 each. For students who may not be able to purchase a rose, we had a heart wall for students to write on for something or someone they are thankful for. We sold all one hundred individually wrapped roses. Again, the Killester students came in clutch, and we had none left within 8 minutes! The night before, I was painstakingly wrapping each rose for two hours with my mum. But it was all definitely worth it after seeing so many students hand their friends roses. Made my heart swell with love.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we ran the movie, ‘Zootopia’ at the Theatrette at lunchtime with fresh popcorn for $1 a bag. Gurnika (Year 11 Community Service Leader) brought her popcorn machine which we may or may not have damaged after due to the large amounts of kernels and butter we put in…But it did make many students happy to have something to accompany them whilst watching the movie.
Friday was the big day. We had the ultimate showdown of teachers versus students on our version of Family Feud. We had Mr O’Neill, Mr Pearce, Penny and Mr Lam on the teacher team, and Janika, Harshdeep, Katerina and Mr McPhail on the student tem. Why is Mr MrPhail on the student team? Because why not! Harleen Kaur (Year 12 Community Service Leader) and I were the hosts, and we had to simmer down the hot rivalry between the teams which was the hardest job. You could feel the tension thickening up as the teams were neck and neck, but the teachers came on top and won a good old apple each to take home as a prize. The student team also had a prize of a bouncy ball each to distract themselves from the pressure of completing Year 12. We had such an amazing turn up for the crowd which included none other than Ms Buick who presented the prizes.
I cannot go by without mentioning the whole community service committee; Harleen Kaur, Gurnika Singh, Mahekpreet Dhillon, Abishalini George, Isabelle Luong, Lia Tran, Joan Sam, Pooja Pradeep, Athikroth Khun, Cindy Tran and Edel Dowling. Special thanks to Ms Scott for your incredible ideas and supporting us throughout the week. It was such a massive project that could not have been done without all of their help. In total, we raised nearly $200 in profit which will all go to Caritas Australia, an amazing charity that aims to eradicate poverty and injustice globally. As my first and last time being a leader at Killester, I could not have hoped for a better group of people to work with. Truly.
Year 7 Leader Activities
On the 25th of May, our Year 7 leaders participated in hosting dodge ball for the year 7 students. We decided to host dodge ball as our first event as a leader and I think the dodge ball event showed significant participation. It was a fun, active game at lunchtime for all the years 7’s. We should thank the leaders that helped out: Isabella, Marilyn, Ling Ling, Senorita, Aurelia and Brianna . These leaders took the time to help set up and guide everyone through the game. The girls who participated in the match enjoyed some lovely lollies for winning the dodge ball event. We were very thankful for the opportunity to host such a fun event and we hope to host one again soon.
Next Wednesday the leaders will be running a Rugby Tag game at lunchtime for the students
