Year 10 English Merchant of Venice Incursion

On May 11, Year 10 English students attended an incursion featuring the Australian Shakespeare Company’s performance and discussion of their class text, Merchant of Venice. This is Julie Hoang’s Review of the performance.

'I enjoyed the actors' different insights on the characters of the Merchant of Venice. From the play, I especially noticed their garner of support for Shylock, which really highlighted the underlying racial themes of the play and how the villain that many may directly perceive him to be is indeed a victim of the social constructs of the society at the time. The body movement of the actor playing Nerissa was top notch and the actors really helped me understand the play better by voicing their opinion in modern English throughout the play.'

Vinnies News

This week is National Volunteer Week, and I would like to highlight a group of students who give up their time every Tuesday afternoon to tutor students at St Anthony’s Primary School. This is run by the St Vincent De Paul Education Program and its aim is to support students who may be at risk. Each week, a busload of Nazareth students (not necessarily Vinnies) travel by our school bus, arriving at St Anthony’s by 3.30. After being greeted by the excited students, the Nazareth mentors pair up with a St Anthony’s student and spend the next hour assisting with homework, literacy and numeracy.  Volunteering to help others is a wonderful way to build connections within our community, and when I speak to our Nazareth Volunteers, they always comment about the joy that comes from giving.

Thank you to the following wonderful Nazareth Students who give freely of their time to assist St Anthony’s students in the Afterschool Tutoring Program, and to the Nazareth staff who have generously volunteered to drive the bus each week:

NAZARETH WINTER APPEAL

The Vinnies have launched the annual Winter Appeal by promoting this throughout each Pastoral classroom and around the school with posters. Every year, the Nazareth community have been incredibly generous with their donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries. These donations are distributed throughout our local community via our Feeder parishes. On Monday, we had two representatives from the SVDP Youth Engagement Team address the Vinnies group, and one very sobering story highlighted was the fact that in Dandenong, more than 100 families are living in a caravan park, in very rudimentary accommodation, often without running water or heating. These are the very people that need our assistance - people in our local neighbourhood.

We are encouraging every family/student to donate either a meal:

  • Breakfast - box of cereal and long-life milk, jams and spreads etc
  • Lunch - dry biscuits, cans of tuna, fruits in a can etc
  • Dinner - pasta, rice, jars of sauces, tuna, etc

OR

Toiletry items - deodorants, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes & paste, shampoo etc. Last year some people filled up a small toilet bag with essential items

Pastoral teachers have placed two bags at the front of their classrooms for students to place their donations. Some Houses are running a bit of a competition to see which Pastoral class donates the most!

The Social Justice Mass takes place on Thursday 2 June, so all donations need to be in by this time. Current donations are low so I urge EVERYONE to make a concerted effort over the next two weeks to bring in their items. Do not be embarrassed to bring in donations. If everyone gets behind the appeal, we have the ability to make a difference… and that is what it is all about.

This video shows why we are running the appeal.
