Peer Support 2022 Wrap Up
By Hannah Blackmore
The Peer Support program was back in full swing for the 2022 school year. The popular program ran every week during term 1 and every second week during term 2. Allowing Year 7’s the opportunity to feel connected to the college, their peers and of course to have some fun.
Leaders underwent vigorous training at the end of 2021 and were excited to put everything they had learnt and practiced into real life situations. There were nerves ahead of the first session, but those nerves quickly changed to excitement and a sense of pride in what they were doing and had achieved so far.
Each session was focused on skills that Year 7 students need to be able to become resilient and hardworking young adults and to allow them to transition easily into high school life. Some of the session themes included, connectedness, communication, teamwork, respect, goal setting, managing conflict and of course house spirit. Year 7 students were involved in activities that were planned by the leaders and were able to share with each other, building confidence and friendships along the way.
All students in Years 8 to 11 have the opportunity to be peer support leaders. If supporting and guiding Year 7 students is something, you might think you would like to try then look out for information on the 2023 program coming out in Term 4.
Year 8 Camp Recap – Heng Xin Liang
Day 1 of Mill Valley Ranch: We arrived at Mill Valley Ranch and everyone was really excited. Once we got out of the bus we had to wait for the teachers once we did all of that we had to wait until 4pm to get in cabins but it was worth it because the cabins were big, we had to set up our beds. We had afternoon tea and all of that, we had our night walk, and we went back to our cabins we went to sleep.
Day 2 Mill Valley Ranch: We had breakfast, got changed and we had all of our activities which were really fun but then at afternoon tea, the camp staff gave us a $5 coupons that we could buy some food at the “general store”. Before dinner, everyone at camp played this huge game of tag called switch where we were in giant teams and got to run around and play tiggy, that was a lot of fun. Then we had dinner and had a trivia night!
Day 3 Mill Valley Ranch: Throughout camp we got to rotate through activities with our teams each day and even though it was cold we still got to do everything that we had planned. We had fun canoeing (the water was freezing!), we got to ride mountain bikes on a secret trail, some of us got to do some jumps and tricks and we also got to get to know the horses for a trail ride. This was so cool, and a few people were nervous because they haven’t been before, but they found out that the horses were nice and they managed to overcome their fears and enjoy every minute it of it! Even the teachers came on the activities with us which was really fun. We also did team building activities and challenges to get to know new people, a low ropes course and a scavenger hunt around the camp. This helped us make new friends and then we ended the day with a movie night (including popcorn!).
Our last day: we got all packed we had to get on the bus to go Gumbuya World. In Gumbuya world we got do go on dodgem cars and other rides which was really fun. We also got to meet some farm animals give them a pat and learn about how to crack a whip!
My Favourite thing about camp was camp was everything because everything was great, and I loved everything about it!!
RUGBY ACADEMY NEWS
This term is huge for our Rugby Academy students. We have been having weekly sessions with Melbourne Rebels Coach Greg Fergus in preparation for the Rebels Shield U16 competition which kicks off for 5 rounds in August. This 5 week competition held every Wednesday against other Academy schools will be hosted by Fountain Gate SC in Round 1 and then at the Power House Rugby Club in Albert Park near the CBD for the following 4 rounds.
A huge thank you to Rugby Victoria and the Melbourne Rebels for providing our teams with competition day shorts and jerseys. The students absolutely loved them and cannot wait to wear them in round 1.
This week our U16 boys and girls competed in the State finals Rugby 7s.
The girls team showed incredible teamwork, they had no subs but kept their heads high and their competition challenged making trys and tackles, talking on and off the field and showing true resilience, they were still able to make 4th place and we are very proud of their efforts.
The boy’s team had a spectacular game against fountain gate defeating them 19-21 in the semi-finals leading up to the grand final against the Grange, unfortunately the boys couldn’t pull the win off in what was a very tough game, but a massive effort from the proud Hampton Park side and our star player Marcus Jonassen-Hammond receiving the player of the day after an outstanding performance representing our school Rugby values or Respect, Integrity, Support and Empathy. All referees and players congratulated him for his skill and sportsmanship.
