4 DAY SCHOOLS CUP

On Friday 29 July - Monday 1 August our volleyball representative teams participated in the Four Day Schools Cup at State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong.

We are pleased to announce that McKinnon Secondary College finished 2nd overall with a total of 593 points. This was just 15 points shy of the winning school and the best McKinnon has performed in the history of this event. This is an outstanding achievement for the program, and we applaud all the athletes, teachers and families involved for making this event so successful.

Congratulations to the following teams who won medals over the 4 days:

  • Year 7 Boys Division 1 - Gold
  • Year 10 Girls Honours - Gold
  • Open Boys Honours - Gold
  • Year 9 Girls Honours - Bronze
  • Open Girls Honours - Bronze

Congratulations to Brit Apps who was also awarded the overall MVP for the Year 8 Girls Honours Division.

SMR SENIOR BOYS SOCCER

The Senior Boys Soccer Team ventured down to the vast confines of Kingston Heath Soccer Complex for the chance to go to State Finals on Wednesday 20 July.

Having gone through as Kingston Division Champions in early May without conceding a goal, spirits were high for what would undoubtedly be a challenge for the McKinnon boys.

Injuries and absences had an impact on the team but we were still able to put out a strong squad on the day.

First up was Dandenong who were technically impressive. McKinnon scored in the first minute with a goal from James Hunt (Year 12) who was a late call up but Dandenong equalised late to make it 1 all at the end. Next were Leibler Yavneh who posed quite a threat attacking wise. McKinnon battled hard, equalising twice with great goals from Alex Albanis (Year 12) and Captain Otto Cox-Martino (Year 12) to leave the score 2 all at the end. This meant we had a winning chance going into our last game to make the final but it was not to be losing to Alkira in our final pool game.

The standard of football was at times white hot. While disappointed not to have made State Finals, I am confident that we can build on this and return next year. Special thanks to all the boys who represented the school both at Kingston and SMR. Special thanks to Captain Otto Cox-Martino for leading the side and acting like a gentleman at all times - on and off the field. I look forward to the Senior Boys going one better next year.

YEAR 7 SOCCER GIRLS SMR CHAMPIONS

On Wednesday 3 August, seventeen Year 7 Girls represented the school at the SMR finals at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.

In windy conditions the girls won their first match against Mt Hira 11-0, followed by winning their second match against Cheltenham 6-0 and finally winning their 3rd match against Frankston 2-0.

Congratulations to the girls who by winning the SMR Championship progress through to the State Final on Tuesday 6 September.

Good Luck Girls!

JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL

The Junior Girls football team were excited to play when they arrived at the SMR finals. They had two matches ahead of them if they wanted to make the Grand Final. The first match saw them completely smash Cranbourne West SC 81-0. Abbie Slaughter kicked 5 goals and Eva Vergers, Clara Lovell and Mica Regev dominated the midfield. The backline worked well together, not letting a score through.

The second match was a very tightly fought contest, 7-6 at halftime in our favour. Matilda Kelleher showed her speed in the midfield and Olivia Smith and Subira Seymour cleared it out of the backline many times. Mentone Girls SC kept pushing and put pressure on us and kicked a point to level the score minutes before full time. Unfortunately, that meant that Mentone progressed to the final due to their higher percentage.

The girls were disappointed but to make it that far without losing a match is very impressive. A team of many strong and developing players to look out for in the coming years.

ALL SCHOOLS NETBALL

On Thursday 4 August the Senior Boys and Girl's Netball teams competed in the All Schools Netball Championships at Knox Regional Netball Centre.

The boys had a solid start but came up against some tough competition throughout the day. The girls had a difficult start to the day drawing their 1st game. They went on to win the rest of their games securing the top spot on the ladder and progressing to the All-Schools Netball Finals on Tuesday 30 August.

Well done to all our Netballers.

NETBALL

Over the last two weeks McKinnon Secondary College have had some amazing success on the Netball Court.

On Thursday 4 August the Senior Girls and Boys teams headed to Knox Regional Netball Centre to compete in the All Schools Championships. It was a tough day of competition for both teams, but the girls rose to the challenge and won their category and progressed to the All Schools State Championships on Tuesday 30 August.

Inspired by the Senior teams, the Years 7 A & B, Years 8 A & B and Intermediate Netball teams have all competed at the Southern Metro Regional Finals. Reaching regional finals is a huge achievement in itself.

The Years 7 & 8 B teams played some really nice Netball and came 2nd in their groups. The Year 8 A team had an amazing day winning their group then played an intense final against Frankston HS, unfortunately Frankston took home the winning pennant. In a similar competition the Year 7A team were undefeated until the grand final where they played a highly contested game against Berwick, but unfortunately were defeated by just one goal in the dying seconds of the game.

The intermediate team had an awesome day at the regional finals, remaining undefeated all day and taking home the blue pennant and progressing on to State finals in September.

Congratulations to all of these athletes and good luck to the Intermediate and Senior teams competing at State finals later this term.

SSV SECONDARY SCHOOLS GOLF TOURNAMENT 2022

McKinnon sent a team of sixteen budding golf stars to the prestigious Spring Valley Golf Club in the heart of Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt to represent the school and vie for a place in the State Championships.

The competition was as fierce as the icy winds that blew that day.

Midway through the 9-hole event the rains arrived just to add another layer of discomfort, however there were no complaints amongst this resilient crew.

Highlight rounds of the day came from Angelique Georgiou (Year 12) who came third in the Senior Girls division, and Billy Stathopoulos (Year 7) who finished just outside the top three junior boys with a respectable 41 off the stick (6 over) in the tough conditions.

Many thanks go to super-coaches Mr Killeen and Mr McConnon who made this day possible.

A little McDonalds stop off for lunch on the way back to school was a nice little bonus too.
