John XXIII Rowing Club

IGSSA Regatta #1

Unprecedented – seems to the word that we are all becoming accustomed to.  Not the start we were looking for with our first IGSSA Regatta, however, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all rowers and parents for their support and positive spirits that were still on display during a ‘trying’ morning.

The weekend curveball was that of air quality, an issue that IGSSA, Rowing WA, PSA or even Venueswest have never encountered before.

Both the AirRater App and the Government website were showing the PM2.5 (PM2.5 are very small particles found in smoke and is the measurement used for pollutants in smoky conditions) to be between 450-611 during the time we were at CLRC. When looking at the guidelines for AQI - outdoor physical activity should be avoided or moved indoors for anything above 100!

Rowing Victoria are the only State that have an air quality document, and their recommendations are that asthmatics should not train / compete when AQI is between 100-149, and all training and events are to be cancelled when above 150. – So clearly, the correct decisions were made.

It did allow for all Freshman and Year 9 Rowers to complete the Regatta Ready Workshop and also gave us all a little test run back into our season.

IGSSA Regatta#2

Thank you to all Rowers and families for your continued understanding in these difficult times to enter crews without much consistency.

Due to low numbers, there will no be bus transport this weekend. All rowers need to have organised a shared lift to the Regatta. Please communicate early if this is a problem.

COVID protocols surrounding Sport

Thank you to those rowers and families who are heeding advice regarding safely returning to sport post COVID. We will continue to encourage a ‘soft return’ to rowing and as always, welcome communication to better help our preparation.

Further to our current protocols surrounding Household Close Contacts and no isolation. With regards to sport and wearing a mask, the following has been communicated

‘If the close contact is alone and not in the presence of others, then the mask may be removed. If the close contact is in the presence of others the mask must be worn.’ This, therefore, will cancel any rowing training and racing at regattas. If you believe this applies to your family, could you please make contact as soon as possible.

Changes to training schedules

The decision to change the training days for all water sessions was made to ensure equity in training time on the water for both males and females, however, also to allow girls to load trailers, along with boys. I thank everyone for their support in this change. All trainings have been communicated via SEQTA notices, and in newsletters. Please make contact with me or your coach, should you experience any problems.

Boys Race Day – May 21

All boys will be expected at this training morning. This is the opportunity for you to train in race conditions. Should you not be able to attend this session, please advise your coach asap.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Sarah Longman who competed in Canberra in the Australian Junior Underage National Trials. Her crew won gold and we are thrilled to welcome Sarah back and give her a well-deserved pat on the back.
