2022 National Schools Constitutional Convention
Year 12 Politics and Law students Will Everett, Zoe Furness, and James Green attended the 27th National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC) on Tuesday and Wednesday. Previous years, the National Convention has been held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra – but due to COVID restrictions, national delegates zoom called from their various state capitals. The Convention is supported by all state and territory Ministers and funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.
As national delegates, representing Western Australia, Will, Zoe, and James were selected from over 800 students from government, independent and Catholic schools, most of whom took part in conventions in their home state or territory.
The topic of the 2022 Convention was ‘Does Australia need a Bill of Rights?’ This topic provided students with the opportunity to explore the Constitution and contemporary issues. Other elements of the program included a zoom call with the Governor General, David Hurley, and presentations from leading constitutional law experts, university professors, and the Human Rights Commissioner, Ms Lorraine Finlay. Decisions made at the Convention will be incorporated into a Communiqué for tabling in Parliament and recorded in Hansard. It is an outstanding achievement – and a wonderful opportunity for these students to hear from expert speakers and learn about constitutional reform. We congratulate Will, Zoe and James on an outstanding achievement.
Applications for the WA Schools Constitutional Convention will be open for Year 11 Politics and Law students in Term 3.

Our witness to our care of creation
John XXIII College students, staff and broader community were invited to take part in the IBVM Bicentenary Jubilee Celebration Ecology Project, along with others within the Loreto network. John XXIII hosted two tree planting events with members of our community honouring the Irish heritage of our Province, by greening the world for a more sustainable future.
Inline with the College’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, seedlings grown by the Sustainability Club and science classes in conjunction with Trillion Trees Australia, were planted during two events. The first event was part of a professional learning for staff, that examined the Bishops’ Social Justice Statement ‘Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor’, which affirms that; ‘we human beings need a change of heart, mind, and behaviour’. The session drew from Scripture, from the theological tradition, from Catholic Social Teaching, and from the wisdom of the world, including insights of the First Nations. The learning concluded with staff participating in tree planting on the west end of the campus.
On Saturday 7 May, College families and students gathered to plant further trees across the College campus. The aim of the planting was to help offset carbon emissions from the College and provide food and habitat for native bird species focusing on the endangered Carnaby Black Cockatoo.
These initiatives create a springboard for environmental education and provide positive action to help compensate for our school's environmental impact. They also give a practical expression to one of the Loreto Province’s justice priorities, ecological justice.

As part of the NAS program in the short term, we will be recommending the following:
- Students will not be expected to compete in NAS in the week post COVID.
- To remain a part of the program, students are encouraged to assist and support their team/coach in the week post COVID.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Patrick Eastwood, Year 11, on being selected in the SSWA Under 16 state hockey team. Patrick will be heading to Hobart in late July to compete.
Also congratulations to Charlie Clarke who won a bronze medal at the Australasian Scooter Championships in Melbourne last week. This gives him an automatic selection into the Australian team for the Worlds competition. A fantastic achievement, well done Charlie.
