An Honourable Mention

Such a strange term, ‘Honourable Mention’. Surely to be mentioned honourably, would be a first rate………. honour. And yet, in the usual Eisteddfod lingo, an honourable mention is too often interpreted as, FOURTH! Not first, second or third, but FOURTH! Let’s rectify this misnomer. An honourable mention is an adjudicators opportunity to recognise some unique or distinct characteristic of a performer, that whilst not qualifying amongst the competitive criteria, is indeed both honourable and mentionable. The performance might not be quite there yet, but the experienced adjudicator can see that the performer has something. A future star? It’s actually quite special. Did I mention process V’s product?

This week’s honourable mention is in no doubt honourable and explicably mentionable. (And it clearly meets all the performance criteria) I would like to draw your attention to the awarding of Associate of Music Australia (AMusA, AMEB) in the field of Music Performance, Viola to Year 11 student, Millie Davidson. Millie’s name will be familiar to readers as a committed member of the student musician body, a leader in numerous ensembles and a musician strongly involved in the College music program and representing the College beyond. This achievement can not be met with any glib responses. Understanding the journey to this achievement; the commitment and dedication to old fashioned time and hard work, will be out of the reach of those who have not experienced such, understandably. It is a joy to celebrate with Millie the journey that has included failure, success, and support for her to rise to a standard and deliver a performance that is worthy to be awarded most honourably.
