From the Principal

From little things, big things grow

Last week, I spoke to the success of Year 9’s weeklong urban experience in Melbourne and this week we received a heartfelt email of thanks from FareShare’s Schools’ Coordinator, Pauline Malkoun.  FareShare is an NGO that rescue food and cook nutritious meals to feed the homeless.  Pauline wrote to thank the College on behalf of the many people who have benefited from their efforts.

Between last Tuesday and Friday, the FareShare staff and Year 9 students:

  • Assembled 2,256 chicken rolls
  • Blocked up pastry which will become 2,500 egg and bacon pies
  • Tore up bread for six batches of sausage rolls
  • Prepared vegetables for 1,500 vegetable rolls
  • Assembled 1,152 vegetable pies
  • Assembled 600 vegetable pillows
  • Lined 400 pastry dishes
  • Assembled 375 cottage pies
  • Assembled so many sausage and vegetable meals they lost count
  • Created labels for approximately 500 single serve dishes
  • Lined trays of pastry dishes
  • Set up the kitchen for the next session on each occasion.

Clearly The Micah Program’s focus on compassion had profound impactOur Year 9’s were given the opportunity to invest time and support in providing much needed nourishment and peace of mind for people less fortunate.  My hope is that their experience in the FareShare’s School Kitchen has inspired them and reinforced that anyone and everyone can help others in need.

Next week, Year 6 head to Canberra in a ‘rite of passage’ that even my generation remember!  We wish the children, Mr Nelson and Mrs Robertson a safe, educational and fun filled trip and I wonder what important lessons will be learnt in the nation’s capital.
