Literacy

Phonics
The spelling rules we have explored this term include:
C and G rule
When c or g is followed by an e, I or y it usually says its second sound.
i is not allowed at the end of the word
'I' can never be at the end of an English word because he was banished.
Doubling consonants after a short vowel
Short vowels like protection and need to double the consonant ie. Bubble.
Good guys and bad guys
The vowels a, e, o and u usually say their 2nd sound at the end of a syllable. i and y do not.
111 Rule
Short vowels like protection and when you add a suffix (ing, ed, ish etc) you need to double the consonant ie. Pop + ing = popping
Adding vowel suffix, 1 syllable word with 1 vowel letter followed by one consonant letter = DOUBLE THE CONSONANT but not x, w, y
Reading
This term, we have continued to develop our reading skills, using our reading tools and some CAFE strategies to build our comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expression.
CAFE strategies we have been practising include:
-Use punctuation to enhance phrasing
-Use pictures, illustrations and diagrams to develop a deeper understanding of the text
-recognising literary elements (genre, plot, character, setting, problem/resolution and theme)
-Tune into interesting words
We have explored these CAFE strategies using whole class books from our favourite website, EPIC Books, as well as when we read our independent books and complete a follow up activity in our reader's notebooks.
Writing
This Term we looked at different authors as mentors. These included Dr Seuss, Nick Bland, Jeanie Baker and a variety of fairytales.
