Year 4 Encounter - Amazing Race

Thursday 12 September was a glorious day filled with sunshine and excitement for the Year 4 Encounter! The day started off with a walk to Kelmscott railway station and a short train ride to Cannington. There we boarded a bus and travelled all the way to Forest Chase in the Perth CBD. We ate a fabulous morning tea from Miss Maud's restaurant consisting of different varieties of sausage rolls, sushi, pizza, profiteroles and brownies.

After morning tea we split up into small groups to compete in an ‘Amazing Race’ around the CBD. There were many fun challenges to complete including; counting how many steps there are to the top of the Bell Tower, catching the ferry across the Swan River to Perth Zoo and back, a visit to Elizabeth Quay and the City of Perth Library. We pretended we were in the Toyota advertisement and jumped on the bridge in Elizabeth Quay, posed like a mannequin in a store window and played in the water fountains in Forest Chase! So much fun!

Then we all caught the train back to Grand Cinemas Armadale to watch a movie. We were lucky enough to have the entire cinema to ourselves to watch a special pre-screening of the movie Ugly Dolls, with popcorn and a drink. The movie reminded us how important it is to keep in mind that we are unique in our own way and that we should always stay true to ourselves.

The Year 4 Encounter was a fabulous, fun-filled day that helped us to develop resilience, confidence and courage. We would especially like to thank all of the parent helpers who gave up their day to come along and join us on such an amazing, yet exhausting day! It was truly a great day creating some wonderful memories.

Year 5 Encounter - Swan Valley Adventure Centre

The two Year 5 classes, Black Swan and Kingfisher, had their Encounter at Swan Valley Adventure Centre from 11 to 13 September, during the most amazing spring weather.

The two classes were arranged into four groups with students experiencing canoeing, rock climbing, archery and the commando course. They also turned their hands to some bush craft and survival skills and became dare-devils flying through the air on the flying fox and the possum glider.

Everyone had an amazing time, with many students pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and celebrating their successes and triumphs. One of the biggest challenges was staying away from home for the two-night three-day adventure, as for many students this camp was their first extended time away from home.

The Swan Valley Adventure Centre is an amazing venue with awesome staff. The students absolutely loved the food that was provided each day. A big 'thank you' goes to the parent helpers and staff for all their help in making the Encounter a huge success.

2019 UNAAWA Global Goals Challenge Awards 2019

Following on from the School taking part in the United Nations Association of Australia (WA) (UNAAWA) Student Leadership Program earlier this year, Year 6 students Mia Collis, Sam Garbellini, Cheria Le Vaillant and Lahni Turner, returned with a sense of purpose, ready to put their mission plan from the day into practice.

Having identified a current issue within our society relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (as ratified by the UN General Assembly in New York), the students pitched their concept to an expert panel at the Parliament of Western Australia. They discovered that close to 90% of textiles end up in landfill. Seeking to make a difference, project Repurpose IT's action commenced with the collection of old uniforms with the support of Wendy Brinner, Uniform Store Coordinator. The goal is to re-purpose these uniforms into animal beds for local kennels.

After submitting a progress report to the judging panel earlier this month, the Repurpose IT team have been recognised for their outstanding efforts, as finalists in the UN Global Goals Challenge Awards 2019. It is wonderful to see our students taking authentic local action with a global focus through the application of inquiry skills they have learnt within the Primary Years Programme.

The students involved are congratulated for their inspirational work towards designing and implementing a project that addresses a global issue.
